Special Ops NYC

ϖ MISSION:
Our mission is to distribute care packages to the homeless of the outer boroughs in New York City. We have plans to collect donations in the form of food, beverages, and slightly worn clothing. I, along with two other volunteers, will be traveling each day throughout the city delivering our packages. In the morning, my partners and I will be preparing meals and wrapping gift boxes of socks, underwear, shirts, and pants. These care packages will later be distributed via our company van.

ϖ ABOUT US:
Jake Hulsh:
I am currently a rising sophmore at Tulane University in New Orleans majoring in both business and digital media production. My goals for this summer came about after coming to the realization that the purest form of fulfilment comes in the form of philanthropy. At Tulane University, service learning is a large component of our curriculum. Each student is required to fulfill at least 20 hours of community service each year. Through my experiences as a volunteer at a preschool in one of New Orleans’ most impoverished districts, I learned how imperative it is to be an active member of our community. My goal for this summer is to continue working with my community and help make a difference in as many peoples’ lives as possible. While the service learning aspect of Tulane’s curriculum is required, it has taught me the very special value of selflessness that I will always carry with me.

I was born on December 3rd, 1996, into a beautiful family comprised of my three brothers, Harry, Maxwell, and Jesse, and my mother and father, Dorothy and Andrew. From the very beginning I was blessed with a privileged lifestyle. Two caregivers at all times, preparing my food and making my bed, private basketball lessons and fitness coaches, summers at the most elite sports camps in the country, and thirteen years at a luxurious private school located on the upper east side of Manhattan. I was fortunate enough to be born into this situation, but there are so many people in this world who are less fortunate. After donating my time for service learning at school, I’ve developed a burning desire to help other, less fortunate people.

A couple weeks ago, I was scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed, procrastinating in the library when I stumbled upon an enlightening interview of reggae artist and humanitarian Bob Marley. During a portion of the interview, Marley was asked if he was “a rich man”. He responded by questioning the interviewer’s definition of rich, asking “when you mean rich, what do you mean?” The reporter responded by asking, “do you have a lot of possessions and money in the bank?” Marley then replied by saying, “I don’t have that type of riches. My type of riches is life”. It is known that Bob Marley accumulated large amounts of money from his music career. However, at a net worth of 130 million dollars, Marley recognized that material possessions such as cash do not make a someone rich. What makes someone rich varies from person to person. My definition of rich is based on a number of factors, including the quality of my relationships, the knowledge and experience I have accumulated and, critically, my ability to help others. It is in this latter category that we have embarked on the Special Ops NYC mission: to help many homeless people in New York City, while treating them with dignity.

Jeremy Kossoff:
I am currently a rising sophomore at Colgate University with a double major in economics and philosophy. After hearing the idea of Special Ops pitched by my one of my best friend’s since kindergarten, Jake Hulsh, I knew that there was something amazing in the works. Special Ops has not only been a way for me to give back to the city that raised me, but also it has given me the opportunity to explore my humanitarian desires.

ϖ GoFundMe:
Over the next few weeks, Special Ops NYC will be seeking a $5,000 investment in order to fund our operations. While our volunteers are all unpaid, there are many expenses of running a charity organization. These expenses include, but are not limited to, funding expenses relating to the lease, insurance and gas for our company vehicle, as well as the cost of food and beverages and the related packaging kits.

ϖ Organic Foods:
Part of our mission is delivering quality meals that have nutritional benefits. In doing so, we are focusing on an all organic approach, free of any processed foods. We will be working with Trader Joe’s as well as Whole Foods located in New York City.

ϖ Dignity:
Dignity is defined as the state or quality of being worthy of honor or respect. There is no reason why our city’s homeless should be treated without dignity. To show our appreciation of these people, Special Ops NYC has made it our mission to deliver care packages with dignity. Therefore, the packages will be wrapped very nicely and organized as gifts of appreciation. The way in which we distribute our care packages will be our organization’s signature acclamation.

ϖ Donations:
We are seeking donations of any reasonable amounts you can spare. We hope that you will support our efforts, which we expect will have a positive and long-lasting impact upon many of the homeless people in our community.
