Custom bikes for children with special needs

Over 25 years ago, STEPS Programs had two unique balance bikes built with an innovative design.
With thicker tires, easy gear ratios and a lower center of gravity, these special bikes are much easier to balance on, while providing the same tipping feedback that teaches children the techniques required to ride a two-wheeler.
Using these bikes as a transitionary step, we have helped hundreds of special needs children gain the skills and confidence required to ride a traditional two wheeler.
Our bikes have helped hundreds of children in the past 25 years, but they are damaged and worn out from being so heavily used.
We need your help, both to repair these bicycles and to build a new set of improved bikes. These improved models will have greater stability, and will help us to better accommodate individuals of all sizes and abilities.
These bikes will be built by the same local company that built the original balance bikes, Mariposa Bicycles. Mariposa is a bespoke hand built bicycle manufacturer, with the unique skills required to design, test and build these bikes to be both lightweight and durable. Mariposa was started by Mike Barry, who personally designed and built the bikes for us. Tragically, Mike Barry has recently passed away, but the great work of Mariposa continues with his son, Michael Barry Jr. We hope to memorialize the great contribution Mike Barry made to our program with our new bike designs.
The special materials and custom design work take a great deal of effort and cost. Our program is small and our fees are only enough to cover operating costs, in an effort to make our program affordable for all families.
All money donated will go to the construction of these new bikes and refurbishment of our existing bikes.
