Spartacus the Short Spine Dog

Donation protected
Spartacus at one time lived with over 50+ dogs  Iridell County, NC Animal Control took 40 dogs from the home in 2015. Since 2012, 90 dogs have been removed from this home. The owners of the dogs had to climb in and out of a window to get in and out of the  home. The floors were rotting and they didn’t even know how many animals they had in the home. At last, Animal Control seems to have it under control.

Due to severe inbreeding Spartacus appears to suffer from “short-spine”.  Spartacus seems to be the only one who has “short-spine” Though Spartacus has lived, we believe 2 years, in these conditions and has survived, he needs some extra care. X-rays would help tell the story of how his body is doing on the inside. It can give us clues as to if he has any internal needs or any future possible needs. He also has dental concerns. With the buildup of tarter he is in need to a dental which will prevent any concerns down the road! We were unable to feel testicles and there is a strong possibility that neither of his testicles dropped and will need to be surgically removed from the abdomen (which is not typical neutering protocol) or that he has no testicles due to being inbred it could have caused genetic issues. The only way to determine this would be to either open him up and do exploratory surgery. To prevent that if we can we would like to be able to do an ultra sound on him. If he has no testicles it is safer for him not to have to go through un-needed surgery.

Spartacus is a VERY sweet boy who loves to have kissed and lie beside you (not at your feet, but on you or up beside you). He gets around with no major issues and can live a healthy and normal life! Though Spartacus can live a normal life, there are concerns that would make it where he wouldn’t fit into just ANY home. He does seem to choke some when eating, which we have switched him to an elevated feeding station which seems to help tremendously. Due to living with SO MANY dogs with only 2 people in the home he was not given the undivided attention that a dog needs and craves. He is a little shy, but is learning to trust people and is doing so great with this. He also is great around other dogs, but shows some possession guarding (toys, attention, food). This is NOT uncommon for a dog that had to fight for food. We are working with this issue also, and he is getting better with it. Down the road there is always a chance of medical needs or medical needs that will come sooner in life (arthritis) that it normally would for the average dog.

To make sure we have the RIGHT fit (home) for Spartacus Iridell County Animal Control wants the adopter to be prepared for any needs he may have and the only way to do that is to have the x-rays, ultra sound, possible neuter and dental done. They are a county ran shelter and though they have come a long way with our medical care, so not have access to these needs for him. They can take him to a vets office to have all of this done, but they do not have the funds to pay for it.
