Sonya Wilson recovery fund

$5,120 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 106 people in 7 months
My baby sister, age 19, was hit by a drunk driver while heading home. The driver was driving on the wrong side of the road and hit her head on. It took emergency services nearly an hour to cut her out of the car. She broke both femurs and her collar bone among many other injuries.

Car insurance will cover some but there will be some up front costs. She will take over a year to recover enough to live normally. My family will need to set up the house for wheelchair. Sonya will be in physical therapy for a long while. 36 months for full recovery. She just finished her first semester of college and will have to postpone her education. Any help is appreciated.

Letter from Sonya:

June 2019

I want to thank everyone who donated to my Gofund me! I apologize for not thanking you all sooner. I’ve been busy getting my life back somewhat to normal. I want to let you all know that the money that was raised helped me a lot. I am now working back at my job at Megaplex Theaters in Sandy and only have three more surgeries to go. I have
gotten a new car and have spent more time with my sister since I hadn’t very much in the past.

I am walking again, but I cannot run yet. I will get there eventually, but once I get these surgeries out of the way, I’ll be able to start physical therapy and
continue to get better. Thank you all for everything you have done for me, as in supporting me. I will continue to update all of you mainly through social media, so if you don’t have me, add me on Facebook!

Sincerely,

Sonya Wilson

Sonya is back home now and enjoying the comforts of a proper bed. She is working on keeping her muscles active while her legs heal. This involves lifting herself out of bed to use the toilet or get in her wheelchair. She is practicing turning corners and getting around the house.

Sonya is very grateful for everyone who donated or supported her by other means. This fund has allowed the home to be prepped for Sonya's arrival and future accommodations. She has a wheelchair that helps her get around, she has to use an assisted toilet, and she has ramps to get in and out of the home.

The road to recovery is still just beginning, in a few weeks we are hoping her legs will be healed enough to start her physical therapy to get them ready for walking; which is still a few months away.

The investigation is still ongoing but we will keep you informed as new information is shared. The detectives have attributed Sonya's survival to the steel frame car she was driving, a 1990 Toyota Corolla. While her injuries are very extensive, she is alive and will be fine, eventually.

Thank you again for all of your support.

Sonya had surgery this morning for her collarbone and knee. This gave her use of her left arm again so she can use a wheelchair and crutches once out of the hospital. Her total breaks and fractures came up to 11. Her main surgeries targeted her legs, knee, cheekbone, and collarbone.

She is very moved by all of the support from family, friends, and the public. She wants everyone to see the consequences of driving impaired, (tired, drunk, high, etc.) If you aren't at 100 percent to drive then don't risk it.

This year will bring along of struggle for Sonya as she recovers from this tragic incident. She will focus on getting her body back into top shape. Then eventually she will look at getting back to work and school, most likely in 2020. Sonya is happy to say that she survived 2018.

Sonya had surgery on both legs; she now has metal rods keeping her together. She has a fracture in her pelvis, non operable. She will need more surgery for her broken collar bone, knee cap, and cheek bone. We also found out that the driver was under the influence of drugs. Sonya is staying positive and is happy to hear all the well wishes from everyone.
