Hey all! My name is Sara Gillis and I live in Kamloops, BC. I am proudly the youngest individual currently sitting on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Mental Health Association in our region of Kamloops - this means I am on a team of incredible people who are passionate about mental health in our community and we meet regularly to discuss the smooth operation of our non-profit organization in Kamloops - this includes The Clubhouse, Youth Programming and the Emerald Centre which is a shelter located downtown Kamloops.
In our last board meeting, I learned that the Shelter is in desperate need of socks - let alone other items such as new underwear and warm winter jackets.
With my association on the board, I have had the privilege of taking a full tour of the Shelter, meeting the staff and even experiencing exactly what a person in need may experience. I was absolutely blown away by the incredible passion that is just spilling out of this beautiful shelter.
Now, Christmas is my favourite time of the year but I'm sure we all can agree that being a university student can be really costly - especially with no prior savings. My plan is to raise money and collect clothes for the Emerald Centre on behalf of my friends and family's Christmas presents. If I put the energy and time into collecting clothes - especially socks for a shelter I will still be taking part in making Christmas special for people yet I will still be able to afford rent at the end of the month haha!
Here's the jist of it: Every penny of this fundraiser will go towards clothes for the Emerald Centre. I am happy to pick up any clothing donations throughout Kamloops as well, and lastly, I am planning on visiting local businesses to attempt to leave a jar for donations at their register.
In recognition for every donation, I plan to write a Christmas card before donating everything to the shelter and I will write the names of every person who donates anything in the card.
