Launch Calgary's Rocket

SOAR is a student run rocketry and balloon organization based out of the University of Calgary in Alberta Canada. Our mission is to advance the cause of rocketry at our university, and to promote interest in the space industry in our city and beyond. Every year we compete in the Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) with universities from around the globe. We are a relatively new addition to the U of C Science and Engineering clubs, but we have made great strides since our founding in 2015:

2016 – First Year Participating in IREC

·         Built a rocket with a pre-built engine and launched it in Utah to 9233 ft.

·         Placed 22nd overall, above notable universities such as Yale, McGill and Queens.

 

2017 – First Year creating a student designed Hybrid motor

·         Built a fully student designed rocket and hybrid rocket engine for the 30,000ft category.

·         Built our own test facility to test and refine our hybrid rocket engine.

·         Placed 3rd in the 30,000ft hybrid category, beating prestigious universities such as the University of Toronto.

 

2018 – This year

·         Nearly doubled club membership to 60 students from previous year.

·         Extensive overhaul and improvements to previous year’s rocket and engine designs.

·         Developing new technology for heating/cooling the rocket systems.

 


Why we need your money: We are hoping to raise $10 000 for this project. Our team is made up entirely of volunteers, so all of this money will be going towards the rocket. We need money for parts, specialized machining we cannot do ourselves, competition fees, and travel fare. We have upped our budget from previous years in order to send more team members than last year to competition. We want to give this unique opportunity to as many students as possible (around 20).

Why we deserve your money: Our team is the only such group in all of Alberta promoting rocketry and we have dozens of experienced student and faculty members with us.

Overflow goals: We will use any overflow money to send more team members to competition and to build up our outreach program to bring the interests of space engineering to local schools.  Any additional funding will be directed into next year’s rocket and engine development.
