Impact on Skyline drama students from a high poverty school (75% of students receive free or reduced lunch) to be cultural ambassadors on the world stage at the American High School Theatre Festival at Fringe Festival 2017: Inspired by the WARRIORS’ Not On Our Ground Campaign as a call to action we’ve focused on addressing bullying, standing up against intolerance, being peaceful warriors, building safe, inclusive communities, and being the change we want to see in our school using theatre to create a community dialogue about improving school climate and culture. We will perform, present, produce, explore arts-based community engagement practices, and educate our audiences on the causes, impact and possible solutions around violence, bullying intolerance in schools, LGBTQ identity, acceptance and safety, deep friendship, and the need to have trusted adults that will listen and advocate for you--through vicarious experience, empathy-building, and the power of transformative theatre.

My students took Master Classes at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London and the Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh, Scotland.  They attended an International Performing Arts College Fair, gave 4 amazing performances of which 2 received standing ovations, experienced international performances from South Africa, Korea, Ireland, Scotland, London, and more that also included meeting the artists and mini-mentor sessions.  They also experienced the AHSTF performances with teens from around the U.S., and sight seeing tours of London and Edinburgh, Scotland.  They cried at the Edinburgh, Scotland airport wishing that we could extend our study tour.  Our lives were changed forever!  My drama students reference back to journey often.  They wish to return but the cost was $6,700 per person.

Student Quote: Demetri Freeman-Tubby
"I want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication that you have put towards your students careers.  You've helped me immensely build a platform, revive more opportunities, travel around the world, and take my theatre discipline seriously to a whole other level.  I appreciate your sacrifices, contributions, and courage believing in us!!!   Thank you for imagining Skyline drama students participating in this amazing learning experience.  It was the trip of my lifetime!"

Our theatre for social change focus has also taken on community issues such as literacy and the power of reading and thinking critically (OUSD, READ 20/20) through storybook theatre for elementary schools; Community-building through drama games, Commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC), Oakland is number 13 on the FBI list and it impacts our middle and high schools; Letters To and From Prison, an intergenerational education project; and Shakespeare and social justice.
