Sri Krishna Mandir Goshala (cow shelter) Cairns is a charitable farm organisation. Our mission is to provide loving shelter for Mother Cow, ensuring a happy, long and carefree life. All the cows, bulls and calves at our Goshala are looked after with great care and love and these animals are never sold to slaughter houses or abandoned even when they become sick or old.
One of our primary concerns is to present alternatives to agricultural practices that support and depend upon the meat industry's slaughter of innocent animals, specifically the cow. Our Goshala is presenting agricultural practices and a philosophy of compassionate cow protection that supports and enriches the relationship between humans and cows as is instructed through the Ancient Vedic literature.
However, due to our charity being manned by volunteers there is a constant struggle to maintain our current cows and the future plans to save more cows from neglect and slaughter. Over and above the daily maintenance, there is a pressing need for more land to graze the cows and grow food for them as our current location is already at capacity.
The Goshala’s basic needs are as follows:
1. Provide feed for the cows
2. Provide medical care for ill and aging cows
3. Rescue more cows
4. Maintain the Goshala farm: pasture, fencing, cowherds and more
On average it costs us an average of $700 to maintain a healthy cow for one year. So we are opening up the opportunity to fellow animal lovers to sponsor a cow and all future cows to our humble Goshala. Sponsors can opt to support a cow of their choice annually, for a whole life time or a simple general donation is welcome.
Each annual or life time adopter will receive an adoption certificate with a portrait of their cow and a personal tour around our Goshala where they can meet and interact with their cow. Currently all our cows have been hand reared by humans so are incredibly friendly and love a good scratch and hug.
Our Goshala began late last year and so far we have in our care 2 mother cows, 1 pregnant and 2 baby calves. The Goshala is open to anyone who wishes to come and visit and if you follow our Facebook page srikrishnamandiraus we will be running a series of posts introducing each and everyone of our cows with funny stories about their unique and lovely personalities.
