Simrri's Cochlear Implant Repair

Donation protected
Integral Hearing Health and Wellness  is committed to improving hearing health for under-served individuals, youth, families and communities in developing countries. Our current project takes us to Jaltemba Bay, Nayarit, Mexico.

In January of this year, I was introduced to Simrri and his family with the hopes that we could help him.

Simrri is a typical happy go lucky 8 year old, with a smile that goes from ear to ear.  Like most boys his age, he loves riding his bike and running with his dog in the yard.  His parents make a meager living by selling plants from a small nursery next to their brick adobe house.

But Simrri's life is not typical, nor is it like most boys his age - Simrri is deaf.  Diagnosed shortly after birth, he was fitted with a cochlear implant at the age of two.  His family made weekly trips by bus to Tepic, about 2 hours away, to attend speech therapy and mapping appointments.  They don't own a car, so they travel by bus, making it almost a full-day trip.

To enhance his ability to communicate and supplement his limited language skills, Simrri has been learning sign language, along with his mother, father, and 15 year old Abigail taught by a local woman from their church.  Simrri, his mother Maria, and sister Abigail participated in sign language classes with one of our highly trained, and skilled volunteer Deaf Educators, Linda.

He is a smart boy, and had advanced to the third grade before his cochlear implant broke.  Unfortunately, his parents could not afford the insurance, and can not afford to have it repaired.  Without his cochlear implant, Simrri has not been able to continue his schooling or his speech therapy lessons.  His future is limited.

If repairable, $1,500 would cover the required repairs, shipping, and insurance for one year.  If his cochlear implant is beyond repair, the insurance will cover a replacement for him (updated).

100% of the funds collected on this site go to help Simrri get a new cochlear implant so that he can go to school, continue his speech language therapy, and have a better life!

Simrri could be back in school this fall with your help! Please find it in your heart to donate whatever you can afford to help Simrri have a better life.

Thank-you from Simrri and his family.
