Silfan’s debt after urgent surgery

OUR DEAR SILFAN NEEDS AN URGENT OPERATION!

On a trip to the USA this year, Silfan was admitted to hospital with excruciating abdominal pain. He was diagnosed with a dangerous condition called 'mid-gut volvulus' due to malrotated bowels. The scans showed that he was very close to losing his small intestine because its blood supply was restricted. Silfan was scheduled for emergency surgery to attempt to save his bowel. Without a bowel, one can only receive nutrition via IV and can no longer digest food. Fortunately, the volvulus spontaneously released at the last minute, restoring the blood supply and eliminating the need for surgery in that moment.

After this episode, both his surgeons warned Silfan of the seriousness of his condition, stating that this could happen again at any moment, and without surgical intervention Silfan could very well lose his small intestines entirely. They have urged him to have surgery as soon as possible, emphasising that it is not safe for him to fly home to the UK without having this operation.

SINCE LEAVING HOSPITAL
Silfan is currently only eating soluble/pureed food, and even so has multiple times recognised the beginnings of the distinct pain associated with bowel obstruction. Each time, in order to reduce the chances of it progressing to an emergency, Silfan stops eating for the day, causing him to lose weight ongoingly. Every meal has the danger of causing a relapse, which has already occured again since, leading to an additional trip to ER.

UNFORTUNATELY...
Despite the assessments of four senior surgeons stating that Silfan needs this surgery urgently and warning of the prohibitive danger of flying home without it, his travel insurance company refute this and therefore have withheld coverage.

Silfan has missed previously scheduled surgery dates due to not managing to get insurance approval.

SUPPORT FOR SILFAN
It is a requirement for this surgery to have at least one person to accompany the patient during the initial consultation, the surgery itself, and throughout the 6-8 week recovery period. So Chris, a close friend of Silfan’s, has travelled to accompany and support him during his surgery and throughout his recovery. Thank you Chris!

THE COSTS
Surgery - £188,000
Other expenses - £16,000
(6-8 week recovery, 6-8 weeks of living expenses for both Silfan and Chris, flights)
TOTAL - £204,000
£8000 - Donated direct to Silfans bank account brining the total to £196,000 (update May 1)

We are so happy to say that Silfan will definitely be going ahead with his surgery as the needed funds have been gathered through a mixture of loans and all of your generous contributions. The support that you are all providing through this crowdfunder is deeply appreciated and will be immensely helpful to Silfan in repaying these significant loans post recovery.

Thank you all so much!

A note from Silfan

Friends, family and all,
This has been the most challenging and uncertain time of my life for sure, which makes it all the more surreal how fortunate I am to find myself sitting here now doing well in recovery and relieved to have had the needed surgery. I can only say that this positive outcome is due to all of you. I am mind blown and touched to my core with gratitude for your immense help, care and love. I just feel so utterly fortunate and grateful to you all. Thank you with all my heart.

The doctors are very happy with the way things are progressing and so I will travel soon to continue recovering at home. My surgeon said the only additional prescription he wanted to make for me at this point was hairspray.

He is a special man, not only in terms of his incredible medical contributions, profoundly changing who knows how many peoples’ lives, and many more to come as he shares his unique skill and knowledge with other surgeons. Aside from this he is so relaxed, warm hearted and cares deeply for his patients.
I was amazed by his team also. One of his assistant surgeons was doing the rounds each day on all their in-patients. I came to learn one day that he had had two night time emergency surgeries that week, leaving the hospital to go home at 5am, yet you would never have known by his attentiveness, decisiveness and great concern that each patients recovery be handled as perfectly as possible. The nurses and staff on the ward did everything they could to aid me in a tough first week or two. I watched them day after day continuously and gladly in service to patients from the minute they arrived until the minute they left at the end of their 13 hour straight shifts with only one 30 minute break.

Thanks to my beautiful teacher, who has supported me every step of the way, I have been far more able to face everything squarely than I would otherwise have been. When overwhelmed or anxious about what sometimes looked like bleak prospects for my future health, she always said the perfect thing, with such powerful love, eliciting in me a natural peace of mind, discernment, gratitude, and a readiness to face and learn from whatever might have been coming down the pipeline.

My friends in the US would drop everything as needed to help me in any way they could, visiting every day in hospital, ER visits, many consultations, offering places to stay near hospital, offering legal advice, and helping with so many tasks related to clarifying my situation and available solutions. A close friend has also now taken two months out of his life and work to be with me through the surgery and recovery. All contact with all my family and friends around the world, and your messages of support have been so touching. I have also been closely supported by two angel-like co-patients who were a little ahead of me in recovery, reassuring me all the way. Others I found online with similar conditions as myself were a critical help in gaining understanding about the condition and the options available.

Thanks to all of your incredibly generous loans and donations, I was able to pay for the surgery just days after friends started the crowdfunding campaign. This enabled me to begin preparing for the operation in peace. Even people I don’t know contributed to help me! Your unbelievable kindness with the crowd funder will allow me to pay a portion of the loans back straight away, which in a couple of cases is very important and it’s a relief for me to be able to do that. The larger loans were not only offered unhesitatingly but were insisted upon, with nothing but the wish for my wellbeing. I am just so touched and thankful to you. I have never conceived of an amount of money like what was raised and I am still in shock that, thanks to all of you, it actually happened. I want to reassure you all that I don’t feel weighed down by the loans, and I feel confident that I will find the appropriate solutions/ways to increase my income in order to be able to repay them over time, especially now I am likely to be in good health, equipped with my newly improved, high tech, titanium reinforced, blinged-up bowels.

If any one of the above ways you have all supported me had not happened, it would not have been possible for me to have this surgery. I cannot thank you all enough, and I treasure my connection, close or otherwise, with you all.
Yours in gratitude and love.
