Sierra (Dani) Pedroza Recovery Fund

$66,740 of $75,000 goal

Sierra (Dani) Pedroza has a profound love for cycling! Her cycling adventures took her back to her fathers’s cabin in Eagle Nest, New Mexico this past week for road and mountain biking adventures.   Her first trip to Angel Fire Mountain Bike Park was a great first run down the mountain. On her second run down, she took a major fall with a severe blow to the head.   What first appeared as a concussion ended up far different.

Sierra’s head impact caused dissections in both carotid arteries. Blood clots formed and dislodged into her brain causing three different strokes.  The most significant one is in the cerebellum at the base of the skull.  Each carotid artery now has another blood clot adhering to the lining and creates a high risk of additional strokes.

Doctors are monitoring her with great care, knowledge and wisdom for Sierra’s best outcome.  Sierra has youth, health, determination, grit, spunk and all-around  badassery on her side.  These no doubt will propel her forward in her recovery.

She is currently being treated in the Neuro ICU unit at UNM hospital in Albuquerque, NM.  She is responding well with neuro checks and assessments.  The brain healing process is slow.  There are so many unknowns at this time and the length of stay is undetermined.  The ICU stay will likely extend into next week.  When medical conditions are stable, then therapy begins and a  rehab stay is generally the next step.

Staying in Albuquerque for the near term is likely for Dan and JJ, her mother.   JJ flew in from Costa Rica yesterday and will help Dan continue to be by her side in support.  This all brings about extended stay costs and logistics since Dan and Sierra live in Austin, Tx. Needless to say, any help they can get to defray medical and support costs through this initial stage, rehabilitation, eventual transport home and longer term care needs is much appreciated.

Hello everyone, this is Dan, Dani's husband. Leigh (the page creator) allowed me access to the site to say thank you and give a brief update.

Thank you, everyone, who has donated or reached out in some form or fashion. Please know we truly appreciate you all and couldn't do this without you.

Most of Dani's updates are on her Caring Bridge site, but if you hadn't been following, here are a few videos of her in rehab. The treadmill video was actually taken 4 weeks ago, but the other two were taken 2 days ago.

We couldn't go forward with these sessions without you! thank you so much and I look forward to seeing everyone in the near future!

Family and Friends of Dan and Dani! Wow, the reaching out and helping a loved one is happening without limits. We have reached $58,357 in this fundraising effort so far! That is absolutely remarkable. You all are so wonderful and generous! Every dollar is going to help in Dani's recovery along with medical bills, home modifications, air transport and continued therapies for the longer term.

A quick update on Dani. She has made great strides from a week ago when she arrived in Austin. The left leg seems to be nearly to full motion which is great! Her days and nights are mixed up so she's getting very little rest at night. Family and close friends are charged with keeping her awake more during the day. Last night, she got a solid 4 hours of sleep which is huge. This should certainly help her energy and stamina for therapy sessions. Swallow testing this week gives us hope for removing the feeding tube soon. She desperately wants some juice or Red Bull!
Stroke recovery is a slow process and Dani is in for the long haul with her army of supporters including YOU!

Dan posted tonight on Facebook the following which I wanted to share with ALL the donors.

"I'm just in awe. No CB update this afternoon, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has reached out this past month. The CaringBridge and GoFundMe sites have been shared over 1000x, individual donations from over 500 friends and family. I didn't create that GFM account, but Leigh gave me the login and pw so I could view all the private donations and everyone's comments. I'm amazed. I'm without the right words. Friends from my distant past, high school, college, SCCA, cycling community. Friends of friends. Competitors I raced against that I didn't even think knew my name. Old customers of mine! Past employers and past employees of mine. I'm just honored to have such a wide connection of beautiful people.
thank you everyone. <3"

Sincerest gratitude to each of you!

Friends and family of Dani and Dan, I cannot express the gratitude we feel for you and your very generous donations. The response to this campaign has been absolutely overwhelming with 422 donations to date. I wish with all my heart that I could have the time to personally thank each one of you. Please know that every dollar of every donation is much needed and so greatly appreciated.

Dani got her trach and feeding tube placed this past Sunday evening. The plan is now to slowly ween her off the sedatives so she can begin her therapies. She still does not remember what happened but has begun to show much greater periods of wakefulness since Monday and is becoming quite active. She is also showing slight left side hand and leg movement which is huge! Dani is a fighter and I believe she will move mountains in therapy.

Dan is on his first commute back to Austin tonight to handle some business which will be just one of many trips back and forth over the next few weeks and months. There will be a benefit in Dani’s honor at Mort Subite tomorrow night after the Driveway races. Dan will be there and there will be a hug line. See the details below. Please come out and raise a glass in Dani’s honor!

The medical bills are trickling in and discussions are underway for the near-term steps of her continued care. Dani’s transportation back to Austin has been preliminarily rejected by insurance, but we are still hopeful as that day is yet to be determined. Why a family has to deal with these financial stresses at this time is horrific to me. We have come such a long way to assist this family so far, but the road is long and expenses will be increasing. Thank you so much again for your donations.

Sincerest gratitude,
Leigh Busby

Thank you, everyone, for your heartfelt and most generous donations! It’s been absolutely remarkable so far. Dani is moving at her pace in the ICU. It’s Day 6 and she is getting a trach and a feeding tube tonight to allow her sedation to be lowered so she can begin physical, occupational and speech/swallow therapies. Doctors are ‘cautiously optimistic’ but affirm it’s a long recovery road ahead.

Dan is overwhelmed at the outpouring of love and support. ❤️Know that his gratitude is immeasurable. Thank you!
