WHAT: A recent report from the UT Institute on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault has presented alarming statistics regarding instances of sexual violence in Texas, including cases on the UT campus. From this study it was found that one in five female students at the University of Texas at Austin have been sexually assaulted since the time of their enrollment. Furthermore, nine out of ten women who have been sexually assaulted reported that their perpetrator was male. Sexual assault has long lasting and negative consequences for all survivors.
HOW: In response to the current state of sexual assault on campus, the 2015 Fall New Guy Class of Texas Blazers has decided to host The Showdown Against Sexual Assualt, a banquet in the Student Activity Center Ballroom that intends to raise money for the Voices Against Violence (VaV) Survivor Fund and host a week of events to increase awareness about resources on campus.
WHY: The Survivor Fund provides funding to students who are survivors of sexual assault and have expenses related to safety, medical care, assistance with rent, transportation, legal fees, childcare fees, moving fees, and much more. In the past three years, the requests for finances from the fund have increased 140%. The purpose of our events is to raise awareness and funds for the VaV Survivor Fund.
