Misty's Training Fund

Donation protected
A year ago, a small confused puppy came into our home. Her first adoption didn't work out; they wanted her gone ASAP.  Misty is a problem dog, but her problem really was she had incredible talent waiting to be discovered.

Misty was turned into the City of Rancho Cucamonga Animal Shelter on 16 October 2015. She came to us 22 Jan. 2016.

When she came, Southland Collie Rescue already knew she was a reactive dog. Even so Misty barely knew her name. She came without a proper collar. She could not be walked in our neighborhood because she was reactive to people, other dogs, other animals, cars, bicycles, skateboards, and motorcycles. She would rear up, pull back and bark hysterically.

She had no manners for behaving well in the house with people or with dogs.

Misty would also bite you on the hands, knees or ankles, sometimes hard enough to leave puncture marks.
In the last year, she has bitten me. She has bitten my husband. She was never taught that her puppy biting was not acceptable. She picked up and knocked down over a dozen ceramic pots, including those with plants in them (five $50 pots and the rest terracotta).  She destroyed the reed screen we had covering our fences.

I have been to the doctor after minor accidents resulting from her reactive nature.  This week, I got a shiner in my second bicycle accident while running her which will likely take three visits.

We gave her the call name Shiva, because she was Shiva, the dogess of destruction.

Misty destroyed the flip camera used to take this video.

Misty's problem is that she has the kind of energy and talent rarely seen in a rough collie and rarely seen in a dog. We enrolled her in the second level of local agility classes. She excelled when we could get her to focus. She has also learned to wait and be quiet when in the company of other dogs as well as to focus with outside distractions.

The teacher, Robert Moray, is experienced at working with shelter dogs and has been able to guide us toward great improvements in her behavior in class which has led to better behavior outside of class.

Even so, Misty is incredibly agile. Misty has taught herself to do tricks like rebound off of walls.

We hope to purchase a crash pad ($200) in order to teach her to do it on command.

Training Misty has been time consuming, taking time away from my freelancing.  We haven't asked to be reimbursed for medical expenses for injuries or expenses for the damage the little girl has caused.  So far about

We're starting this campaign to help raise money to cover the cost of her agility classes, the cost of my medical bills and the cost of her general destructive Shiva-ness.  If we have enough funds, we will also enroll her in herding classes. In time, we think Misty could compete and become an agility champion.

You can also donate directly to Southland Collie Rescue (earmark for Misty).

The next session of Torrance City canine agility classes begins 2 April 2017 ($182).

Become part of Team ShivaDiva and help Misty become the super dog she was born to be.
