Bulldog Auction

Donation protected
Those of you that follow Secondhand Hounds may remember Bernadette and Olive, bulldogs that touched many lives.  We want to honor their memory by saving as many bulldogs as we can from a Bulldog auction taking place on October 17.

What is an auction?
Puppy mills and commercial breeders purchase their dogs and puppies from auctions.  They are set up as live auctions where an auctioneer tries to bid up the prices of each individual dog.  They are treated like merchandise, and not living animals.  You are allowed to view the animals before the auction and the conditions are deplorable.

Typically we shy away from purchasing dogs at auctions because we do not want the money going back to the breeders in order to purchase more animals and continue the cycle.  But this auction is a bit different.

Why is this auction different?
The breeder of these bulldogs recently passed away. Therefore, any funds raised from the purchase of these bulldogs will be going to his estate, and not to perpetuate animal abuse and neglect through breeding.

Why is this important?
With your help. we can rescue these bulldogs from a life of breeding hell.  A life filled with cement floors, unsanitary conditions in small cages sitting in your own filth, artificial insemination, constant cesarean sections (or not in which case many mothers die) and having your babies taken away from you too soon.

Why so much money?
The last auction we attended, bulldogs were going for more than $3,000 each.  We have no idea how much they will go for at this auction, but it is safe to say in the thousands of dollars.  Additionally, there are 3 pregnant females available at this auction.  Our hearts are set on saving these mamas and the lives of their unborn puppies.   We are not using general funds for this auction, so the ability to save lives depends on you and our generous donors.

Why are we doing this?
Let us tell you about the lives and memory of 2 very special bulldogs from Secondhand Hounds.

OLIVE'S STORY

Olive spent the first 6 years of her life in a concrete kennel.  She was bred for the sole purpose of creating puppies.  She was a cash cow, not a family member.  At 6 years old, due to her extensive health issues, she was dumped by her breeder and came to Secondhand Hounds.   She was morbidly obese at 89 pounds upon arrival and should have been closer to 50 pounds.

We spent thousands of dollars on:
-corkscrew tail amputation
-entropion eyelid surgery
-skin removal after weight loss
-constant eye issues
-dental surgery
-spay surgery post breeding (massive amounts of scar tissue)

Luckily, Olive found herself an amazing foster family to help her on the road to recovery.  Little did they know when they picked Olive up, she would never leave their family.  Olive's spirit was not broken.  She found her life again and spent 69 beautiful weeks with a family that adored her.  She should have been given more time. Years were stolen from her from her previous breeder owners.  She passed away unexpectedly September 12, 2015 at only 7 years old.  Her family is crushed, but they are so very thankful that we are attending this auction in memory of her.

BERNADETTE'S STORY

Bernadette came to SHH in January of 2014 from a breeder who was about to euthanize a little tiny puppy because she had "swimmer's syndrome." Of course, we said NOOOO, we will take her! Once we received her at 8 weeks old, it was determined she had cerebellar hypoplasia and we immediately started intensive therapy on her. Within 2 weeks she was almost walking on her own. She had the most delightful, stubborn, and loving spirit. But her bad breeding got the best of her, and when she contracted pneumonia, her trachea, which was not growing at the same rate her body was, closed. We opted for humane euthanasia, after the specialists advised us there is nothing we could do for her but watch her drown.

This is what happens when bulldogs get sold into commercial breeding operations that do not regulate breed standards. Help us stop their suffering. Donate today!

We will share photos of the auction and bulldogs we save from this campaign.   Please share far and wide!
