Sherwin's Operation

Donation protected
Sherwin is a 12-year-old boy, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy, that affects his mobility, he is a full-time wheelchair user.

Although his disorder has robbed him of many pleasures that children enjoy, he has a positive outlook, a cheeky sense of humour and determination to live his life to the full.

Sherwin loves travelling, exploring new places. It is truly heart breaking to see his world shrinking to only wheelchair accessible places.  But there is a danger of it shrinking even further if he loses some of his physical skills, such as weight bearing, as he grows up. He understands it and works really, really hard at maintaining his skills and overcoming his physical limitations.

Yet, because of spasticity in Sherwin’s body resulting in his muscles being very tense, it is an uphill battle for him. At times, it feels like it’s one step forward, then two steps back however, he is not about to give up! There is only one way to win this battle: to reduce spasticity in his legs so that Sherwin can train his muscles more effectively and actually make progress!

At present, SDR (Spinal Dorsal Rhizotomy) operation is regarded as the only method that could greatly reduce or even eliminate spasticity permanently in patients suffering from Cerebral Palsy.

Having done an extensive research, we, as a family, are confident that SDR, followed by intensive physiotherapy, is the only way for Sherwin to develop functional skills necessary to lead independent life.

Without it, in years to come when I am no longer able to look after him, the likelihood of him being placed in a residential setting is unfortunately high.    It pains me immensely to admit it and I, as a mother, will do anything in my power to provide my son with any opportunities that will help him to build better future for himself.

SDR IS such a unique opportunity for us.  It will be truly a life-changing operation for Sherwin, that will allow him a future where he could live independently in his own home.

SDR  is not funded by the NHS.  We need to raise the money ourselves.  I ask all kind people out there to donate what they can towards the operation.

We will be eternally grateful for any donations.

Thank you for your generosity.

Rita, mum, and Sherwin.
