Shema: Empowering Women in SE Asia
Shema is our response to a hurting world. Our aim is addressing and alleviating extreme poverty and human-trafficking through engaging in ethical textile manufacturing and documenting the work by highlighting those involved globally through film.
We chose Shema for our company name. A word meaning "hear," Shema reflects our vision to hear with our hearts and listen for a new way.
We aim to plant 25 new sewing co-operatives in the next five years, employing at-risk or rescued survivors of human trafficking in Southeast Asia.
Our clothing is:
--Transformational: restoring and empowering vulnerable, abused and impoverished women in South East Asia.
--Responsible: sourcing our raw materials to protect the environment.
--Desirable: designed to be a high-end garment that is exclusive.
Shema, a Benefit Corporation (B CORP), is endeavoring to build capital. We are seeking financial donations to support Shema in our initial setup phase: operating costs for year one total $175,000. Your donation would not be considered a chartiable tax deduction. If you would like to donate over $800, please contact Team@Shema.Global for instructions on how to give.
Your partnership would be extremely valuable to us; we feel strongly that our project will be instrumental in changing the lives of countless women in Southeast Asia.
We want to partner with people whose hearts and mission are congruent with ours. Our hope is that you will also hear with your heart and listen for a new way to unite with us in helping heal a broken world.
"In the face evil, choose to be dangerous.” --- Daniel Walker
We are choosing to be dangerous, and to run as hard as we can to see change happen before our very eyes.
Our new friend, Mollie, adopted Shema for her senior project and is hosting a 5K Run!! All profits will be donated to us. Isn’t that incredible!?
Get those running shoes on, and please join us at this event!

We just submitted the final changes on our tee-shirt prototype! We went through three rounds and are pretty excited to see this come to life. Since we have finalized the type of fit we want for our brand, the design house we hired is now working on the rest of the garments we have designed together. Coming up, we have tank tops, long-sleeves, and hoodies being constructed together for their turn in the prototype party.
It’s been quite the journey to find a mill that holds the type of standards and certifications that we require. We want to have our supply chain as clean as we can. Not only are we looking for certified organic fibers, we also need to make sure employees are paid a fair wage, and the mills are using environmentally-friendly practices during production.
We have nailed it down to two mills. From here, we will be receiving samples to see how well we like the milling of the fibers. Once we select the final mill, we will begin to work with them to create the type of fabric we are looking for.
We are talking to a couple suppliers and believe it or not, we are sending those machines over right away! Our plan is to have them arriving by the first of March. We are excited for the women to start learning on electric machines. Once they arrive, we will start paying the women a wage even though they will not be producing anything that we will sell until mid to late summer. We want them to feel confident once we officially go into production.
Thank you to all of those who have been such an encouragement to the Shema Team. We feel so honored by your time, support, and wisdom that has been so freely shared.
We are excited for these next few months as we get closer and closer to production!
A year and a half after launching the Shema project, we are fighting harder than ever to see these sewing cooperatives established and the lives of young women forever changed. Co-founder Alisha and I (Adam) continue to work full-time without salary which we have done since our project launch in July 2015! We are determined to see this vision become everything we know it is destined to be: a company that sustainably impacts and changes women's lives forever. And to that end we sacrifice daily to move this project forward. And everyone who has given, who consults, who serves on our board, and who personally supports us does the same - sacrificing time, money, and energy to see Shema become what it is destined to be. A company that changes lives.
As we have entered into this new year of 2017, you can be sure that Alisha and I are more committed than ever to moving this project forward and to that end are giving it our all. "Go for it." These were the last words of my grandfather Joe Francis to his children on April 14th, 1994. I finally took his advice: I went for it. With Shema, I went for it, and I know in my heart how proud of me he would be for what I am fighting to accomplish and who I have become. And with Shema, we will continue to go for it.
Will you continue to come with us on this journey? Will you sacrifice with us as we fight to build this sustainable answer for empowering women rescued from and at-risk of being trafficked in Southeast Asia?
I want to ask you to give again. We need your help and support as we go for it this year to change lives in Southeast Asia. Watch the video and see how far we've come: Shema is not just a dream anymore. But we're also not fully operational in Southeast Asia and we need your help getting this first cooperative to that point. Give today.
Adam Goldstein, Shema Co-Founder
How can I email you privately? I have some sewing equipment left from running a dressmaking class that I would be happy to donate. Do you have a website? Thanks
Hi Adam, thank you for sharing the video. Am very interested! God bless your efforts! (Will contact you via PM also). Antoinette.
