Shelter for Sophea

Meet the cutest Cambodian child ever.

His name is Sophea and he has stolen my heart. He’s 3 years old and has the kind of joy that will light up your whole world. He loves to do the Hokey Pokey and he’ll dance along to any song we sing in English class. He also loves high fives and blowing kisses. His smile shines past the dirt that covers his clothes, but the weathered faces of his mom and dad tell a story of poverty and despair.
They are one of the poorest families living in this small village tucked inside the Cambodian jungle.
Sophea lives in a small, one-bedroom bamboo hut with his mom, dad and 3 siblings. The hut has just enough space for each of them to lie down. There’s no mosquito nets to protect them from deadly diseases like malaria and dengue, and no stable roof to keep them dry during monsoon season. They have no beds to sleep on, no toilet to sit on and no bathroom to bathe in. The kitchen is nothing more than a few damp pieces of wood that will hopefully sustain a fire long enough to cook a frog caught from the feces-filled pond.

But this can change. Poverty doesn’t have to be a reality for Sophea and his family.
Like you and me, this family deserves a chance at a bright and sustainable future. Here is what they need to get there:
· A new home with mosquito nets, sturdy wood, and a tin roof to keep the rain out.
· A small bathroom behind the house with a toilet and running water.
· Bicycles for the family so that they have transportation to school and work. Currently, their only form of transportation is a barely-functioning bike that dad borrows from a friend. A bicycle would allow Sophea’s mom to get to a nearby town to sell the baskets she weaves and generate more income. Sophea and his brother and sisters also need bicycles to get to school. Currently, they aren’t able to attend school because it’s several miles from the village. The only education they receive is through missionaries like myself who teach at the church twice a year. Bicycles will allow Sophea and his siblings to receive the education they need for a brighter future.
· School uniforms and supplies for Sophea and his brother and sisters.
The good news is that there are people like you and me who are able to pull families like Sophea’s out of poverty. With your help, Sophea and his family can live the life they never thought could be theirs.
Will you help them get there?
