‌My name is Melissa I was born with a rare condition called Angelman Syndrome (AS).
AS is a complex genetic disorder which affects every aspect of my life. I have delayed development, and intellectual disabilities. I am 14 years old but still have no concept of danger and don't have the skills needed to complete everyday tasks most people take for granted. I need help with eating and toileting. I need 24 hour care and will do so for the rest of my life.
I have problems with movement and balance I also have seizures (epilepsy) I have a very poor sleep pattern and can sometimes have as little as 3 hours sleep each night. The most frustrating part for me is I cannot speak.

My difficulties will likely increase as I get older and this is why  my Mum and Brother have started a fund to help provide me with the necessary things I will need to help me as I grow to make my life a little easier.

The first thing everyone notices about me and, comments on, is my huge smile, this is one of the main characteristics of having Angelman syndrome, where it is a fantastic thing to have please don't imagine that because I smile all the time I don't have lots of problems to deal with and huge hurdles to overcome every day of my life.

Thank you so much for your support and  generousity, it is much appreciated.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to my Smile Fund it is so incredibly generous of you all to support me. I am still in need of a couple of things for my Sensory room but people have been so kind donating most of the necessary items needed.
My Smile Fund as you know is an on going project to help support me as I grow . As I am getting older my needs are changing so funds will be used to buy equipment and services to improve my quality of life.
Fundraising is now focussed on my need for an all terrain wheelchair so all donations at present will go towards this purchase Again Thank you so much my friends xxx

One of my lovely Twitter friends Tina has started a page to help raise funds for a Mountain Trike all terrain wheelchair to help me access more places together with my Mum and Brother. We love to visit the Lake District but with my existing chair, which is very difficult to push over anything but a flat path, we can't go on long walks which include rough paths and tracks. It would mean so much for the three of us to be able to enjoy the countryside more, we aren't able to go on long holidays so our days out or overnight stays are very important to us. Please if you can help donate on here or this is the link for the other page. Thank you so much

I had to hand back my iPad to school at the end of term as I am moving to a different school in September, I posted on my Twitter page about my sadness in losing my only means of communication,to my surprise I received a message from one of my friends offering to buy me a new one. I was completely taken aback by the offer , a few days later I was delighted to receive a lovely pink iPad engraved with my name. I am completely overwhelmed by the kindness shown by the most amazing guy , Simon Taylor has never met me but only knew my story through Twitter, he saw the sadness of a young girl without a voice who had lost her only means of communication ME. and for that I will be forever grateful.
Amazing kindness
