Shamattawa, in northern Manitoba, Canada, is an Ininew community that is working towards long term solutions for some of our challenges.
Recently, Shamattawa has experienced a devastating fire that resulted in the loss of our only grocery store, the band office, the 911 call centre, and the radio station. A STATE OFEMERGENCY was declared on Thursday September 22nd as a result of this fire and a call-out for support was issued. There is no road access to Shamattawa, as it is only accessible through plane and winter road for a few months each year - making shipping basic necessities very expensive and providing some unique challenges.
Many people have already come forward to support the emergency response, however, community members and leadership have identified the need for longer term supports to prevent tragedies like this from happening in the future.
The purpose of this fundraising campaign is to:
1) Provide emergency supports to Shamattawa in times of crisis (example: paying for water and freight to be shipped in)
2) Develop meaningful opportunities for children and youth in Shamattawa in the longer term (example: training youth in the community to be leaders)
3) Strengthening Shamattawa's relationships with on-reserve and off-reserve community members to support one another (example: connecting those who are off-reserve for health and education related reasons with family/community members).
We are aiming for $50,000 to start as our goal, because expenses in the North are far greater than in urban centres. Example: air fare is over $1,000 to Winnipeg return, and 4 litres of milk is about $15.
