Hello all! My name is Seneca Mieth, and I'm a 19-year-old transgender male living in Jamaica Plain. I'm passionate about teaching, and am currently finishing my first year with City Year, and am going to do another year with them this upcoming year. Afterwards, I am attending RIT for Biotechnology and Molecular Bioscience, which I deferred to do another year of public service.

Earlier this year I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and earlier than that I had a lot of trouble walking. Putting weight on my legs for longer than a few minutes causes me a lot of pain, and walking all day became too difficult. I would often barely get to work (if I didn't call off because I couldn't get out of bed), come home, and immediately go to bed because I was so exhausted from standing and walking all day that I had no energy left to make dinner, bathe, or eat. Oftentimes, I would have to crawl to use the bathroom. I've collapsed before from just walking down the street, making dinner, or going home to my apartment. Going out with friends was almost always out of the question.

I managed to get myself a hospital wheelchair, but it is meant for exclusively indoor, short-term use, it doesn't fit my needs or allow me to be as mobile and independent as I need to be. With my upcoming year of physical service, it may not be able to stay together. (It already creaks more than my bones!)

My insurance will not cover a wheelchair, as they require one to be paralyzed for them to pay for it. I need help affording one on my own. Additionally, the stipend I make with City Year is below minimum wage. (It's technically volunteering, even though it's my full time, >50 hours a week job.) I have been amazed by the generosity of the public before, and I need it once more.

Even if you can only contribute a little bit, it would help me significantly on my way to mobility and independence.

Thank you so much for listening, and please consider donating what you can.  For those interested, here is a breakup of the costs.

I want anyone who donates to know exactly where their money is going. Red is things that are things that are absolutely necessary, yellow is things that are not completely necessary but highly useful, and green is just a bonus if I reach it! I am open to any and all questions, comments, and/or advice!
