Sensory playground for BraveHearts

£4,159 of £7,860 goal

Raised by 20 people in 21 months
My first fundraiser for the BraveHearts Program was to complete a half-marathon (21km) at Angkor Wat, Siem Reap on Sunday 4th December 2016. I'm happy to share that I achieved this goal, as well as reaching my first fundraising milestone of 500GBP (I actually raised 663GBP/814USD) thanks to such generous supporters!

My second milestone is much more ambitious … to try to raise an additional 7860GBP (9656USD) to add to the amount raised in December, to fully fund the building of a structure which will house the new outdoor sensory play area for the BraveHearts Program .

Since my first fundraiser at the end of 2016, we (BraveHearts volunteers) have been collaborating with the Building Trust International team here in Cambodia who have designed the structure that will cover the sensory play area. The have created a stunning lotus flower shaped structure that will enable the children to spend much more time outdoors stimulating their senses.

We have also teamed up with Lily Cox, from iCAN British International School (who is an experienced outdoor play practitioner, volunteering weekly with the BraveHearts Program) to trial and gather the most suitable sensory activities for the infants and children to be included in the play area.

All the resources for building the structure and creating the sensory activities are being locally sourced here in Cambodia, to ensure this project will be totally sustainable in the years to come.

The creation of this ambitious sensory play area for the BraveHearts Program is going to be a real team effort.

The team at Building Trust International have donated their designs and ongoing support, Lily and the iCAN school community are actively fundraising for this project to create the sensory activities and I have spent the past 3 months training for my next half marathon in Sihanoukville, Cambodia on 5th March 2017, as well as an upcoming triathlon in Bangkok on 23rd April 2017. Together we are hoping to raise the funds to enable the structure to be built at the beginning of May 2017, before the rainy season arrives in Cambodia.

BraveHearts needs help from generous people like you to continue to support the many disadvantaged infants and children with disabilities in the BraveHearts Program based in Cambodia.

With only 3 days to go until my next fundraiser (international triathlon in Bangkok), the underlay on the roof of the covered structure for the sensory play area at BraveHearts has been completed! Thank you so much to the team of volunteers from Building Trust International!

Next up is to add a rubber waterproof layer before finishing with bamboo tiles.

After the roof is complete and we have raised enough funds, we can make a start on equipping the sensory zones inside the structure.

Please share this campaign on your social media platforms - the more we can raise awareness of this life changing project, the quicker we hope to achieve our goal to benefit the children and young people in the BraveHearts Program here in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Thank you for your care and support!

Much love,

On Friday morning I visited BraveHearts again to see how the sensory play area structure was progressing.

The bamboo underlay on the roof is nearly complete. Next step is to add a layer of rubber to waterproof it before finishing with bamboo tiles on top.

Once the structure is complete and we've raised enough funds, we can then make a start on developing the sensory zones underneath the structure and landscaping.

Following on from the Phnom Penh half marathon 2 weeks ago, my next fundraiser will be an international triathlon in Bangkok, this coming Sunday, 9th July. If you would like to sponsor me or donate to the completion of this amazing sensory play area project, then please follow the link here.

Every $/€/¥£ makes a huge difference. Thank you for your continuous care and support!

Yesterday I completed my latest fundraising challenge by running the Phnom Penh Half Marathon (21km) in extremely hot and humid conditions. No matter how tough it got, I knew it would all be worth it as we strive to reach our goal which will drastically improve lives for all the infants and children at BraveHearts.

Next month I’ll be heading to Bangkok to continue my efforts to raise additional funds, as after the structure framework is complete it will need a bamboo tile roof and then onto funding/equipping all the sensory zones inside.

Here's a photo showing the progress being made in the construction of the framework for the sensory play area structure ...

Thank you so much for everyone who has donated towards this project so far! The structure to cover the outdoor sensory play area at BraveHearts is starting to take shape. Once we have raised enough to complete the structure then we'll be continuing our fundraising efforts to equip the sensory zones inside the structure.

Please share this campaign on your social media. In less than 48 hours time I'll be running the Phnom Penh Half Marathon (21km) in a bid to raise more towards completing the structure!

Thank you for your continued support!
