The Steminists are a group of fifteen and sixteen year old students from South Kamloops Secondary School in Kamloops, British Columbia. As part of a JA Company Program through JA British Columbia with financial contributions from Arrow Transportation, and mentorship from Kamloops Innovation, Joy Factory Films Inc, and many more, this group of young women quickly became a startup story that has grown nationwide.
From L to R: Kamloops Steminists, Alia, Rohkeya, Sarah, and Tasia.
In just five months, the Steminists have created their own business and developed a unique, successful business, Recycled Sounds. Recycled Sounds is an eco-friendly speaker and smartphone accessory engineered from recycled wood. The customizable device can be used for amplifying music, watching videos and streaming services on all sizes and models of phones. Totalling in selling 110 speakers through their online and community contacts, retail contracts and pop up shops, the Steminists went on to receive the Ledcor Regional Company of the Year Award, earning $3,000.00 towards their future post secondary education. When school let out for the summer, they created their very own documentary with Shaw TV and developed an annual report, more exciting firsts for this company.
On October 4th, the Steminists were selected by JA Canada to represent Canada in JA Americas Company of the Year Competition in Lima, Peru on November 25-28, 2018. At the JA Americas Company of the Year Competition, students from Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean present the results of their enterprise and learning experience and appear before a panel of independent judges who determine company performance against the competition criteria.
“Recycled Sounds was chosen by a panel of judges who assessed the submissions on several criteria including the 3 P’s (people, planet and profit), innovation, and the quality of their written submission,” said Karen Gallant, Vice President, Programs and Charter Services at JA Canada. “The judges were impressed with the company’s performance in all dimensions. We are very excited for them.”

Today, Rohkeya, Kara and Hope were working at the Kamloops Makerspace and building some speakers. We learned that laser printing is SO MUCH FUN.
On Monday, we are practicing our business presentation and our presentation skills.
It is hard to believe this is all happening so fast!!
Over the long weekend, we have been hard at work preparing our final business presentation, getting our business pitch ready for the flash competition, and working on our trade show booth display! We are learning so much about branding, messaging, and how to effectively tell our startup story.
Our trip planning is going well too! Everyone has their legal documents in hand and plane tickets booked. After the JA Americas Case Competition is over, we're looking forward to visiting Machu Picchu and exploring the amazing country of Peru.
Only 9 days to go!
