This is Scott Staley. Many of you may know him as Pirate Scott, and many of you may not recognize him at all, but chances are, if you live in Salisbury, you've been in closer contact with him than you may think. Allow me to explain:
Scott is a chef. He moved to Salisbury in 2005, and if you've ever eaten downtown it's pretty likely that Scott was the man behind your delicious food. You may recognize him from Sweet Meadow Cafe, The Salisbury Wine Shop, or Uncle Buck's, but he has also cooked for LaCava, Brickstreet Tavern, 1504, Cooper's, Creative Gourmet Catering, and even wrote the menu for City Tavern.
Scott is a Navy Veteran currently in the process of applying for VA disability benefits for PTSD and cranial neuropathy caused by a traumatic brain injury. He has irreparable nerve damage and scar tissue in his brain and brainstem, and it's spreading. It causes memory loss, numbness in his extremities, blurred vision, headaches, disorientation, pain down his left side, impairment of motor skills, vertigo, and muscle weakness.
As the damage in his brain spreads, the symptoms worsen, and could one day lead to total impairment, or worse... While doctors are hesitant to say that this could one day be a death sentence, it hasn’t been ruled out, and Scott feels as though he is living on a clock.
Scott's mother is also in declining health. She is 80 years old, diabetic, suffers from congestive heart problems, and struggles to take care of herself living alone in El Paso, TX- Scott's home.
Scott wants to be in Texas to take care of his mother and surround himself with what family he has. He just wants to go home.
Over the last 6 months Scott has ridden a bus to and from El Paso several times because while he wants to live his life at home with his mother, everything he has collected through his life is still here in Salisbury. Everything Scott owns is sitting in a friend's garage and he has no way to take it home. To some it may seem easy enough to leave your things behind and start over, but this is 50 years worth of memories, family heirlooms, clothing, books, and artwork.

Moving is expensive no matter which method you use, and the further you're traveling, the higher the price. El Paso is 1,700 miles away. Uhaul quotes are several thousand dollars, and not really an option because Scott no longer drives. We have checked into many different methods of shipping, and there's just no cheap way to go about this.
Scott will be staying in town until he is able to move his belongings, but he isn't financially capable of making this move happen, and without work the longer he stays the less money he has to live off of. We'd like to help him get home to his mother as quickly as possible.
Between moving costs, travel expenses, and the cost of living until this move can happen, we need to raise a minimum of $2500. The faster we can raise the money the better, because the more time that passes the more money will be needed to be spent on food and housing, and takes away from what can be put toward getting him home.
This is so important. Please help us get Scott home, where he belongs. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
