On March 13 Eileen Carson Schatz was diagnosed with Stage III pancreatic cancer.  On June 12, after three months of aggressive chemotherapy along with collective prayer and visualization to shrink a tumor, Eileen had a Cat Scan at the Johns Hopkins Pancreatic Cancer Clinic to check her progress.  Mark and Eileen are happy to report that with two more months of chemo followed by targeted radiation, Eileen will be a good candidate for life-saving surgery, which is the only path to a cure for this pancreatic cancer.

Because of the debilitating effects of the illness Eileen has had to step back from the things she loves most - dancing, singing, and presenting her arts integrated residencies in the schools. Her husband, Mark Schatz, has largely cleared his touring schedule so he can stay home and be her caregiver through this difficult time. So they are facing a drastic loss of income, not to mention expenses that insurance does not cover.

For most of her professional life Eileen has shared her love of traditional music and dance and has celebrated the value of cultural diversity through her theater presentations with Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble and The Fiddle Puppets. She is a Certified Teaching Artist specializing in arts integrated residencies in the schools, and is devoted to community outreach programs, especially with at-risk teens. With great generosity of spirit and artistic vision she educates, entertains, and inspires folks of all ages and backgrounds across the United States and abroad.

Mark & Eileen are humbled and bolstered by the generous donations and messages of love and encouragement they have received from friends and fans all over the world.  If you have not yet made a donation, your help is welcome and appreciated.  Expenses are expected to well exceed $50,000, so we will keep the campaign open in hopes of reaching $75,000.

Please join hands and hearts as we bond together to visualize healing and lend our financial support.

Love, Light, Hope, and Joy!

An update from Mark and Eileen...

We participated in a pancreatic cancer clinic at Johns Hopkins on June 12 and were encouraged by the assessment of their team of docs. They recommended two more months of chemotherapy, then five days of radiation, followed by Whipple surgery which was developed by a Johns Hopkins surgeon by that name. This will all extend into early October.

Between the oncologist’s adjustments in the chemo drugs and help from a naturopath, the side effects from the treatment have been thankfully much mitigated. Though Eileen is weak and fatigues easily, she has been able to go to a fitness center pool, or down to our little beach on the Severn River a few times a week to do water workouts.

Though it’s an adjustment for Mark not being out on the road making music, we have loved sharing the wonders of spring together. Eileen has festooned the exterior of the house with flowers, including a couple of potted tomato plants (farmer Eileen), and I’ve managed to spray our day lilies and hostas enough with deer off that the deer haven’t feasted on them (yet).

We taught at Common Ground on the Hill June 25 through 29, a music, dance, and humanities camp that Eileen and I have been teaching at since its inception 24 years ago. The camp’s Director, Walt Michael, invited us to bring Footworks’ Co-Director, Marsha Searle, to help Eileen teach her classes which made it possible for her to be there. Doing the thing she loves to do and being around many old friends was affirming and healing.
We took part in the camp concert on June 28 and Eileen sang, danced, and got the audience up singing and clapping as only she can do! You can view this performance by entering “Eileen Carson, Mark Schatz, Common Ground” on facebook.

Thank you, thank you, thank you once again from the bottoms or our hearts to all who have sent encouraging, healing and loving words and donations.
