The Tempestry Project, an ongoing collaborative fiber art project, aims to visualize climate data in a way that is accurate, tangible, personal, and beautiful.
We were thrilled to learn recently that our work has been accepted into this year’s Creative Climate Awards in New York City, an annual exhibit hosted by the Human Impacts Institute that uses the arts ”to share knowledge, broaden the climate conversation, educate, and incite action.”
The exhibit will feature our trio of Utqiagvik (formerly known as Barrow) Alaska Tempestries for 1925, 2010, and 2016. These three pieces alone demonstrate in harrowing vividness the warming of Arctic winters and the permafrost thaw.
Our hope is to be able to attend the opening reception on September 17th ourselves, along with our Tempestries. We would be so grateful for your help in getting us to New York and the exhibit.
Your contributions will go towards defraying the costs of travel, room & board, and missed work hours (oh for paid vacation!), making it possible for us to be there in person to talk up the project and see what other climate artists and educators are doing.

Even in our very temperate yellow/green corner of the world, there used to be more blues and dark greens of freezing and near-freezing weather. In more recent years you can see the yellows and oranges of warmer temperatures becoming more common, seeping into what were once cooler seasons.
