Support Rainer Beach HS Performing Arts!

In 2016, Rainier Beach High School Performing Art scholars won the award for the Best Short Film made by students in Washington State. This was a huge win for RBHS. They were even invited to take their film to nationals where they could have possibly won again. Unfortunately, they were faced with the obstacle of having NO MONEY, so they could not go.

Most recently in 2017, these amazing students placed at state for the second year in a row, this time for the Best Lip Sync performance (using a song from Hamilton). Their celebration was cut short when they realized they could not return to compete again due to NO MONEY.

This year Rainier Beach Performing Arts Scholars have the opportunity to compete at the Washington State Thespian Festival at WWU in Bellingham, WA, March 15-16, 2019. They are very excited about the possibility to go and showcase their talents while being amongst Washington state's top performing artists.  For many of the students, this is their first exposure to a wider world of the arts. It is a way of opening their eyes to the possibilities of what could be.

Currently, they are faced with the same on-going barrier as years past.  NO MONEY.  Without funding, RBHS Performing Arts scholars will NOT be able to go—unless our community pulls our resources together to support them with monetary donations.

These students are overwhelmed with worry about raising funds to make this a possibility. This should not be so.  It is heartbreaking to watch these talented students, who are full of so much potential, not be supported.  Even more heartbreaking, is to have them watch other Seattle Public High Schools take the journey while RBHS is excluded because of the lack of funding. “Why aren’t we supported?” Is a question many of them ask.

Rainier Beach High School is full of kids who struggle more than other students in the district.  A lot of it has to do with socioeconomic factors. 76+% of the school population comes from low-income families.  Along with the fact that Rainier Beach HS PTSA is one of the lowest funded High School PTSA's district wide.  They need our support more than ever. There are constant barriers they face on a day to day basis. Competing at the WA State Thespian Festival should not be one.

It saddens me that Rainier Beach High School has far fewer resources than other schools. This is NOT EQUITABLE. Yet, STILL THEY RISE! Rainier Beach High School was recently awarded the 2018 School of Distinction Award for the fourth year in a row. Way to go Vikings!!! While these young scholars are working hard performing at their best to make academic gains. We as a community should work hard and support them by showing the students they are valued, and we care.

Right HERE, right NOW, we can stop the cycle of Rainier Beach High School theater students missing opportunities due to lack of funding. Let's ALL make a difference in these students lives and GIVE to Rainier Beach High School theater scholars. WE CAN DO IT!!! Let's ensure Rainier Beach High School will not be left out again!!! PLEASE make a difference and DONATE TODAY.
