Hello,
My name is Nicholas Nichols . I'm a writer and photographer based in Brooklyn, NY. I applied to attend the Inaugural Omnidawn Poetry Writing Conference & the Community of Writers Workshop at Squaw Valley , and I have been accepted to both!!!!! I will have the amazing opportunity to work with Victoria Chang ,C. S. Giscombe , Carl Phillips, Layli Long Soldier , and Rachel Zucker at Omnidawn. At Community of Writers I'll have the amazing opportunity to work with Forrest Gander (2019 Pulitzer Recipient for Poetry), Brenda Hillman , David Tomas Martinez , Jane Miller , Sharon Olds (2013 Pulitzer Recipient for Poetry), Gregory Pardlo (2015 Pulitzer Recipient for Poetry), and Robert Hass (2008 Pulitzer Recipient for Poetry). I didn't know about the Omnidawn's conference until after the scholarship application deadline passed, but I was still determined to apply. I need your help fundraising a minimum of $1,950 to attend the workshop. I've also just gotten word that I received a full scholarship to attend Community of Writers, so I only need to figure out the flight and travel!!! Here's a breakdown of expenses:
Tuition + Food: $900(ASAP)
Housing: $400 (ASAP)
Flight + Travel: $550
Emergency: $100
Flight + Travel (Community of Writers): $550
To help introduce myself and further, I've compiled a few FAQ's
Who: I'm a writer and photographer based in Brooklyn, NY. I've received fellowships from Cave Canem , Callaloo , and the Watering Hole. I'm also a member of the National Book Critic Circle and Associate Curator of the Lineage of Mirrors column.
What: I'm working on a manuscript that focuses on the effect of Black trauma on the Black interior. The project is drawing inspiration from writers like Vievee Francis, Cyrus Cassells, Gregory Orr, Jericho Brown, Robert Hass, and more. For examples of my work look here .
Where:
Omnidawn - Saint Mary’s College campus in Moraga, California.
Community of Writers - Squaw Valley, California
When:
Omnidawn - June 6th-9th
Community of Writers - June 22nd-29th
Why: I'm unable to attend university due to financial constraints, but I'm still working diligently at becoming a writer. Recently was accepted and successfully funded another conference which I will attend in July. Working as a bookseller, freelance writer, and photographer is taxing, but it's what I love to do. When I attend these spaces, I act as an advocate to democratize these spaces further and fight for marginalized voices.
Thank you so much for your time and care.
