Fund Camille's Graduate Research

Hi, I'm Camille Talag! I am completing my Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Design Strategies at Dún Laoghaire IADT. My thesis is centred around how youth in the Greater Toronto Area use storytelling and narrative practice for our wellbeing.

Two things have remained true to my core since I was a child: I love stories, and I want to spend my life helping people. Not knowing how to combine both, I lived in the stories of others instead of my own. It took a lot for me to learn how to find my voice and share my story with others. And now’s the time for me to really dig myself into this topic.

The Future of StoryTelling Summit

I applied to be invited to attend the Future of StoryTelling Summit  in New York City on October 3-4, 2018. This will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to attend workshops, learn about the different ways we tell stories, and do research for my thesis. One of the speakers is actually someone who my program coordinators had suggested I speak with - long before I applied to attend! I know that this conference will really bolster my research in designing solutions for improving how youth manage their wellbeing through story.

The Ask

Total estimated expenses for Future of StoryTelling Summit: $3,200 CAD

Conference attendance: $2,000 USD or $2,700 CAD

Travel
Flight, YYZ to New York (Kennedy/LaGuardia): $245 CAD (estimated average)
New York City Transit: $32 USD for 7 day metro card

It’s been really difficult (almost impossible) to find funding for graduate students who are:

Canadian citizens living in Ontario + Studying at a school in Ireland + Attending a conference in the US

I live in the Greater Toronto Area, my school is in Ireland, and I get to study remotely from October to January. My program is a 4 month long thesis, so it’s very short and very intense. We are expected to produce a research report and design an artifact, whether it’s a game, publication, methodology, workshop tools, etc.

I don’t have any source of income other than depleting my bank accounts, so getting as much help as possible would make my life easier.  My loan from OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) does not cover the full tuition cost.

I am taking the chance to get as much funding as possible within the next month. I am booking my travel and accommodation within the next couple of weeks, which is an exciting but highly stressful ordeal because I’m going to be in Ireland for most of September. The Ireland trip involves attending student orientation and leading a design charrette (think of a highly intense workshop), with a bit of time for exploring.

Why You Should Help

People who know me will tell you that I am a very involved and ambitious student of life. If you’re wondering about my skills and qualifications, feel free to check out my website that includes a general portfolio of my work: https://camilletalag.com/ .

Here are a few extra things about my work:

- Storyteller at Trophy as part of the Brave Festival, Harbourfront Centre, Toronto

- Dean’s List at George Brown College 2017-2018 (GPA of 3.5 or higher)

- I was part of a class of nine students at the Institute without Boundaries at George Brown College. We studied Interdisciplinary Design Strategy (the program that bridges into the current masters program) and worked with Toronto Global, the Institute for Competitiveness & Prosperity, and Neptis Foundation. Together we designed a suite of products for our clients, including three publications, a communications strategy, a game, an AR map, a website, and an in office installation.

- I’ve been volunteering with the Harry Potter Alliance for over 5 years. I’ve served as Resource Development Writer, Resource Development Team Leader, Chapters Program Manager, Chapters Manager, and now am the Engagement & Design Manager. I’ve developed curriculum resources such as the Avatar: The Last Airbender Fandom Forward toolkit. I’ve also designed and co-designed three narrative leadership workshops at the annual Granger Leadership Academy

Nobody in my family has pursued this type of education at this level. I would love to add this conference and masters program to the legacy that my parents and family started when they made the very brave decision to start a new life in Canada.

I normally don’t do things like this, but I believe that I can rely on the kindness and generosity of friends and strangers. If I don’t get the full amount, I will still be just as grateful for any and all donations that come my way. I know in my soul that I deserve to live as full a life as possible, just like anyone.

Thank you for letting me share my story with you. Please help me to do work that will allow others’ stories to heal themselves, just like I did with my own.

If you’ve read this all the way through, thank you so much.
