Hello family, friends, horse enthusiasts and endurance riders everywhere. I am Alex Shampoe, a 17-year old Young Rider from Colorado, USA. I am one of five Young Riders to be selected for the 2019 U.S. Endurance Team for the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) Endurance World Championships for Young Riders on September 18 in Pisa, Italy.
I began riding horses when I was six years old. When I was 11, I heard about Endurance riding. When I was 13, I went to my first American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC) ride and there was no turning back. Now, at the ripe old age of 17, I am representing the United States at a World Championship.
To say I am lucky is an understatement. Over the last few years, dozens of AERC members have sponsored me and donated almost 40 different horses for me to ride in AERC events in both the U.S. and Canada. Your support, friendship and trust have taken me this far.
I wish I could take every one of you with me to Italy. My thoughts of you, your horses, and your support will be with me every mile (or should I say kilometer) I ride.

Valerie Kanavy has donated Dude Free Gold to me for the World Championship. He has a heart of Gold just like his owner Valerie. Without Valerie’s support I could not live this adventure. I will always be in her debt.
Dude will travel to and from Italy on a special airplane. He and I, along with USEF Vets and other team members, will spend about three weeks in Italy. My expected out of pocket expenses are US$30,000. If you would like to contribute to Dude’s expenses, as well as mine, that would be great. Regardless, I will keep you updated. Please keep Dude, Valerie and I in your thoughts. We hope to make you and Team USA proud.
