Kona Security Guard Help

$25,760 of $25,000 goal

Raised by 304 people in 9 months
Created September 29, 2018
In the early morning hours of September 17, 2018, our beloved family member John Kanui was viciously and brutally attacked while doing his job as a security guard at a local Kona, Hawaii hotel.  Three people  assaulted him and beat him to a state of unconsciousness ..... and then continued to kick him as his body lay lifeless (while an additional person in the group stood by and video tapped without providing aid).  Because of these cowards senseless actions, my  sweet  Uncle  suffered a broken neck and a traumatic brain injury - among other injuries.  He is still currently in the intensive care unit listed as critical condition ~ still fighting for his life!

My Uncle has always been kind, outgoing, willing to help those in need, which is why this is so hard for us to fathom. Our family is absolutely heartbroken that our Uncle had to endure such hate at the hands of pure evil.  In a matter of moments, these idiots changed all of our lives forever!

Although our family is rich with love and faith, we are financially unable to support all of my Uncle's current needs.  As you can imagine his medical bills are mounting by the minute, his bills are surpassing their due dates, all the legal fees that he is likely incurring on top of the uncertainty of the medical needs he will need in the future (immediate or long term) ~ we are asking for some help, any help would be so kindly appreciated!  ALL donations collected will go directly to and for the care of our Uncle!

We know and completely understand that not all can give monetarily and that is perfectly okay.  We  will take continued prayers and kind thoughts in exchange as well.  We are true believers in the power of prayer! Please pray that God will lay his hands on Uncle and heal his body, mind and soul. These monsters have been charged with Attempted Murder 2, please pray that justice, real deserved justice will be handed down!!

Thank you so much in advance,

Candi Runn

** We know that the video of the attack was released by the press yesterday and has hit social media like a wildfire. But because of nature of graphics and how horrific it was to view... please do NOT post that on here.  **

Posted on my Facebook page 6/14. It has been several months since I have updated on my sweet Uncle. Well as of this morning, a jury has been selected, opening statements have been made and now we leave it up to state prosecutors and 12 peers to determine these POS cowards fate. I am nervous, I am scared. I question my own ability to be able to sit in that courtroom and withstand as they show the video of my Uncle being beat to almost death. Everything reflects to my Uncle and his medical state now. Regardless of the sentence these asshole may receive, it doesn't change the fact that my Uncle is paralyzed from the shoulders down. He will (likely) never walk again and his confinement doesn't just stop at a wheelchair. It's his whole life, his being changed on that night that these people took his life in their hands. My uncle deserves justice.... honest to god, justifiable punishment for what they have done! Please pray that justice will be served!

I apolgize that it has been a couple of months since I have updated this page. Our family is so appreciative of each and everyone of you who have continuted to keep my sweet Uncle and our family in your prayers, those who have sent us words of love and encouragement, and to those who have been able to help with our financial needs. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, we are truly blessed.

Unfortunately, we are still under strict direction from the Prosecutors office that my Uncle's current medical
can not be shared via social media or any other like outlet at this time. With the criminal trial fastly
approaching, we have found that in the best interest of my sweet Uncle that we abide by the guidelines
set forth. We do not want to jeapordize or potentially alter the case in any way shape or form. If by not sharing specific details at this time is what is being requested by those helping seek justice for my Uncle, then we as a family will oblige their request. Above all, our family wants justice for our loved one, we NEED this for him. He DESERVES justice!!

Several weeks ago, on behalf of our family, my cousin Jennifer did a brief interview with a local news station. She stated that "his life will never be the same"! I can honestly tell you, that no truer words have ever been spoken about my Uncle and this ever life changing event!! On that fateful horrible September morning, 4 people, 4 complete strangers to my uncle, 4 cowards took his life ....his life as he knew it, only minutes prior to that vicous senseless assault. He will NEVER be the same! Any future plans he may have had, will NEVER be the same. Our family will NEVER be the same! His life will NEVER be the same!

Trial starts in a few weeks and as our family travels to either be by my Uncle's side or sets travel to the islands
to sit in support for my Uncle, please pray for their safety. We are all traveling with heavy worried hearts, all wishing this wasnt our reality. Much love to you all!

Let me just start by apologizing that our updates have been few and vague. Because there is a pending criminal case against the 3 cowards who viciously attacked our sweet Uncle, we are limited to what we can and cannot disclose at this time regarding his medical status. As much as we would like to keep you all informed - making sure that justice is served to those people who tried to take my Uncle’s life is extremely important as well. We don’t want to jeopardize his case in any way!

Here is what I can share. Uncle has been safely transferred out of state to a specialty hospital. This particular facility specializes in spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury, both of which of my sweet Uncle sustained from the assault on September 18th. This place will be amazing for my Uncle if and when he is healthy and stable enough to do so. Unfortunately though; he has been faced with setback after setback. He will have under-go another critical surgery very soon and he is still not breathing on his own.

What we do know for sure is…. his life will never be the same. He will face many challenges and struggles - likely for the rest of his life. He will spend days second guessing his faith and he will repeatedly want to know why this has happened to him. We as his family, friends and compassionate human beings sadly will not have the answers to this question – because we ourselves do not understand and/or comprehend such evil. But what we can and will do is hold his hand when he is scared. Pick him up when he is down. Carry him through when he doesn’t have the strength and above all pray that God will heal his body, mind and soul. That is what WE can do!

Unfortunately, our financial needs have grown. Because of Uncle’s most recent delay in recovery, we will face many new needs. Our family has been taking turns flying/driving out to sit bedside with our beloved while he goes through this tough transition period. The costs of flight, gas, lodging, meals have been mounting and we are asking for a little more help. Nothing little is to small ~ anything helps!!

Thank you to all who have been able to give to our cause. To those who have shared our post and especially those who have given us unmeasurable amounts of love and support. We are truly appreciative to each and every one of you ~ THANK YOU!!

Thank you again to all who have been able to donate and/or have continued to keep our loved one in your prayers. We are overwhelmed with all the love and support, we truly are so blessed!

Our family has decided to move my Uncle to a hospital out of state that specifically specializes in spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injuires. Both severe injuires that he suffered almost 3 weeks while being viciously assaulted at work.

Although his intermediate plan has changed, the financial need is still great. On top of bills, legal fees, medical needs, we will now have family travel expenses as well. We are almost to our second goal and rising. Any and every bit helps!!

We know that our loved one has a very long road ahead of him. The reality is that his life will likely never be the same All we can do is pray for strength, pray that God will guide us while continuing to help his body, mind and soul heal. We believe in the power of prayer!!

Thank you all again!!!
