This is Sebastian. He is 4 years old and is a world to us. He was born full time, with no issues. Smiling, interacting, developing as others, until when he was around 1 year old, when things started to change.
Sebastian slowly went away into his own world. Wasn't producing any words, couldn't shake his head "yes'' or "no" to answer questions, lost eye contact, problems with sleeping and eating begun. There were episodes of hysteria, acting out, hyperactivity and our gradual withdrawal from social life.
In May 2017 Sebastian was diagnosed with Autism and Sensory Processing Disorder. This came as a huge shock to our family. Sebastian feels and experiences the world differently to most children. While coming to terms with his new diagnosis we pledged ourselves we would do anything what we could for Sebastian.
Months of research, videos, therapies, consultations...During one of the consultations, in addition to the above, it appeared severe food allergies. So our son is on gluten, sugar and diary free diet. There are also dietary restrictions to other fruits and vegetables.
Sebastian regularly attends speech and language therapist. He also attends behavioral and sensory therapy which cost us hundreds of pounds each month.
Since we tried all of the above, there is some improvement in Sebastian's behavior. He is still non-verbal, but is able to communicate using pictures, understand few simple commands, reacts to his name and make eye contact.
Through our research we came across a Dolphin Assisted Therapy (DAT), which is proved to be successful to many children with autism to increase speech and motor skills. We are aware, the therapy will no "cure" Sebastian's autism, but it would hugely improve his quality of life by regaining his speech and communicate his needs. The total cost of therapy comes to 3000 pounds, which for us, as one income family is out of reach.
We ask for as little, as you can, to help our son to attend that and regain his speech, help him to come out from his shell and also help us so we could finally hear him say Mum and Dad.
We aim to attend next DAT therapy in June since the sooner we start, the better long term outcomes for Sebastian.
Thank you for all your support for our preciouse son.
