Sean Rey, Victim of 2 Hit & Runs
On April 2, 2015, my cousin, Sean Rey was riding his bicycle to work when a truck collided into him. He was ejected from the bike , then ran over by another car, being dragged appx 56 feet. Both cars left the scene of the accident. The first vehicle returned but the second vehicle remained at large. He was just a few feet away from his job.
Sean had multiple broken bones including a shattered hip, pelvis, and femur. He also had multiple fractured ribs, a skull fracture, a fractured left fibular and fractured right elbow, multiple cervical and thoracic fractures, and a collapsed lung. He underwent several surgeries and everything was touch and go for days.
Sadly, after 16 days of fighting so hard, Sean succumbed to his injuries & passed away on April 18, 2015. He was 26 years old.
The police identified Rebecca Roberts as the first driver who initially hit Sean and left him in the road. She never rendered aid nor did she ever dial 911. The police found the second car & took DNA samples from the under carriage. After over 3 months, we are still awaiting results!
The lack of response and incompetence from the police department may have something to do with the driver of the second vehicle, Forrest Duncan, who for decades worked as the court bailiff in Russell County and who's son now holds that position. His son-in-law, Chris Blackshear, is a Phenix City Council member. Mr. Duncan has ties with the District Attorney (of over 30 years), Kenneth Davis.
Neither driver have been arrested or charged with any crime. While other similar cases are being handled in a timely manner, Sean's is being swept under the rug.
What started out as a campaign towards Sean's medical expenses, has now turned into his funeral expenses and court expenses. It's time we get Justice for Sean.
This case remains "under investigation", and anyone with information is asked to call the police department at (334) 298-0611. Or you can call and ask why there's a delay in justice for this case. Good luck on getting a response as they have yet to give Sean's family any updates.
ALL MONEY GOES DIRECTLY TO SEAN'S MOTHER, BRENDA, TO HELP PAY FOR JUSTICE FOR SEAN!

Allow me to introduce you to my brother. His name is Sean. Sean was a 26 year old, with his whole life ahead of him. On April 2, 2015 that life stopped, not the breathing, not the beating of his heart, but life as he knew it stopped. This happened because a young girl who was not paying attention to her surroundings hit him as he rode his bike to work. He was supposedly hit mere feet from his destination. Now normally, people who hit someone would call 911, they would make sure the person they hit was ok. Not this girl, no she drove almost a block away from the scene, left Sean lying in the middle of the road and did not call for help. How long he laid there we do not know. This is tragic enough but Sean’s story does not end there. A Good Samaritan arrived called 911 and checked on Sean and put her headlights on his body so he could easily be seen. She was then almost hit herself as another car came barreling down the road, she was able to jump out of the way from the car she was waving down, but Sean could not. The man driving this car ran over Sean dragging his body under the car for many feet, some say 30+, some say 50+. The reason we are not positive of the exact amount is because Sean’s body was thrown out from under this car, as the man proceeded to run the red light, and not return to the scene. His car was later found when he tried to hide the evidence by taking the car to a mechanic in another state, and asking that the mechanic not report it to his insurance. This man was 88 years old and a county court house worker for over 20 years, a position his son now holds, and he also has a son in law on the city council.
Sean lived for 16 days, but on April 18th he succumbed to his injuries. He was broken beyond repair, all due to the negligence of two people who did not care enough to call 911, or to stop and see how bad he was. Sean was the person who would help anyone who needed it, he was a good person, much better than I am that is for sure. He took in all the stray animals he found. He was always the first with a kind word, or a listening ear. He marched to the beat of his own drum, and was a huge conspiracy theorist. He loved The Walking Dead, and Alabama football, and yet the people responsible for killing him have still not been charged. There has been no justice for the one person who would have fought for fair treatment for both of the people who took his life. I am asking that everyone spread this around the internet, tell your friends his story, tell your family. Bicyclists deserve to live just as much as people who drive cars. Let’s take a stand and make sure the people of this country keep watching for bicyclists, and remember Sean, and help our family get justice for Sean and as much closure as possible.
Supporters of the 2 guilty parties that hit, ran over, & ultimately killed Sean have asked the Phenix City police to take down the roadside memorial that Sean's family & friends have started. Apparently, this memorial site is "offensive" & "an eyesore" and the supporters of Rebecca Roberts & Forrest Duncan don't like it. So my Aunt & Uncle have had to remove the flowers & signs as to not offend those responsible. These 2 have already taken Sean from us. Now they are taking a comforting memorial from us. They have already tried to sue for damage to themselves & their vehicles. What more do these inconsiderate, disgusting excuse for humans want from us? All we want is justice for Sean. The Phenix City police are taking their sweet time on this case, but are quick to respond to a complaint about a memorial. They keep causing this family grief so I will keep their name front and center so everyone knows these 2 individuals, Rebecca Roberts and Forrest Duncan of Phenix City, Alabama, stole a young man's life with their thoughtless and careless actions.
According to the news report, 21 yr old Rebecca Roberts was the first person to recklessly & carelessly hit Sean while he was riding his bicycle to work. He was just 10 seconds & 25 yards from his job when she was too distracted with her cellphone to pay attention to her surroundings while driving, & turned in front of him, hitting him with her truck. She then left the scene, only to return & sit in her truck several yards away in a parking lot, gabbing away on her cellphone. She left him exposed in the middle of the road to traffic and did NOTHING!!!
Luckily, a witness with a human heart & compassion, got out of her car, shined her bright lights on Sean so people could see he was there, & proceeded to direct traffic away from him.
Moments later, 82 yr old Forest Duncan barrels down the road, almost hitting the woman trying to help Sean. She jumped out of the way to avoid getting hit. This man then runs over Sean & drags him 56 feet before releasing him and proceeds to drive away.
2 weeks went by before the old man takes his car into a body shop claiming to have run over a cement block. Shop workers notice blood, skin, & hair on the under carriage & call police. The police take samples of the blood, skin, & hair for DNA testing & question the old man. He later changes his story saying he hit a deer.
Meanwhile, the day this unfortunate event happened & many days after, little Rebecca Roberts was out drinking & partying. She was complaining on facebook how much her life sucks because she had to drive home on a flat tire & that SHE is having bad luck. She even tried to sell her truck, the one that hit Sean & caused the chain of events, hoping to make this all go away. She even had the audacity to try & sue for injuries she claimed to have sustained (pickup truck vs bicycle)...all while Sean was in the hospital fighting for his life!!
Sean died 16 days after this preventible homicide happened. He was only 26 years old.
It's been 6 weeks since the initial incident, a month since samples were taken for DNA testing, & almost a month since Sean's death. And still no word from the DA regarding the DNA evidence and still NEITHER ONE RESPONSIBLE HAVE BEEN ARRESTED!!!
This is a disgrace!!
Please help us get justice for Sean. No parent should have to bury their child because some ignorant young woman can't put her phone down while driving.
In honor of Sean Rey, the family asks that you please sign the online petition to establish bicycle lanes in the town where Sean was so senselessly & tragically taken from us. It does not matter where on the planet you live, you can still sign it. It takes just seconds to complete, and you will be helping to save another bicyclist from the same horrendous fate that Sean endured.
We thank you for the continued prayers & support for Sean's family & friends. Thank you.
I only met Sean once or twice but I have lost good friends and close family. I lost 7 cousins and my dad in 3 days. My heart goes out to you and your family. Live Long and Prosper as Spock would say. My prayers are with you and your family and remember you are not alone. You have friends, family, and your Lord and Savior.
I want people to be aware of an online fundraiser I stumbled upon today asking for money in regards to Sean's death. It is from a site called crowdrise.com. Be advised that it is a fake. The organizer, Christin Garey, copied word for word what I wrote here. Christin Garey is not known to anyone in the family not is this person listed as a friend of Sean's through facebook. Christin Garey has not sent any money raised to Sean's mother, Brenda, as it is stated in the description. DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY TO THAT SITE!! The ONLY online site where 100% of the proceeds goes directly to Brenda is this one through gofundme. I have contacted Christin Garey through the crowdrise fundraiser site and told him/her to remove it immediately as it is fraud. I also contacted the crowdrise site and notified them of the fraudulent page. Anyone who tries to extort money through the death of Sean Rey, be advised that we will contact the appropriate authorities and you will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law!!
Sharon Lador, I would never in my wildest moment say something like you just said to anyone. It seems so cruel and callous. I can only pray that you never have a tragic incident such as this to bring you to your knees and not have anyone rather it be human or celestial to believe in or pray to. I have been in medicine for 37 years and medicine is not the all healing miracle that you seem to think it is. God have mercy on you young lady.
WOW!!! You people are amazing! For those who just can't afford to donate, we still thank you for sharing and keeping my brother's story out there and by helping in so many other ways. I thought after the accident that people could no longer surprise me, but I am in awe of this! Thank you and so much love to all of you!
Contact the Criminal Injury Board...they will assist with the medical expenses since he is the victim of a crime. You can also apply for financial assistance through the hospital and of course medical assistance through the state. My thoughts and prayers to you and your family.
I cannot possibly express how overwhelmed I am that so many people have shown compassion and love the way you guys are showing. I promise you that my son will be taken care of with every single penny of the donations made. I never had in my wildest dreams an idea that people would respond they way they have are are continuing to do. God know you are angels in human form. Thanks to each and everyone of you and thanks to my dear niece Kristine Seven for setting this site up for her dear cousin Sean. We have a long long road to travel but it will be much easier with the help of my friends (you guys) who have opened your hearts. Much love & gratitude.
I don't know if the family are still reading this, but as a credit specialist and consumer advocate I feel obligated to let you know that, because your son was an adult, you are not legally responsible for any of his medical bills. Regardless of what debt collectors may tell you. No one should deal with the financial ruin that can come from a hospitalization of the uninsured while also attempting to plow through the intense grief that you all must be feeling. My heart goes out to each and every member of your family. I found out about this because a friend of a friend on Facebook was given $10 and a business card from Sean's father about passing on kindness. She made a post to Facebook which was then shared because she literally had no money to put gas in her car. That $10 saved her. I wanted to applaud that act. What Sean's father did renews my faith in humanity. If you have any questions at all regarding your rights when dealing with your son's hospital debt please feel free to contact me. If there is any way I can help, I would be happy to try. God bless all of you. You are in my prayers.
Dear Friends of Sean Rey ~ We are still fighting an unjust and highly irresponsible judicial system to get JUSTICE for Sean Rey. The ones responsible for Sean's death have still not had to answer for the atrocity that caused his untimely death. All the evidence has not been collected in spite of the police department knowing that it is available. We still have no death certificate due to the state of Alabama's untimely delay in producing results for DNA verification. During the meantime, the ones responsible for his death are still running the streets without having to answer for their crimes. And the medical bills keep coming in. 16 days of intensive care and multiple major surgeries have added astronomical undue pressure and stress to an already stressful situation. Please keep in mind that Sean eventually succumbed to his catastrophic injuries on April 18th 2015, however the bills keep pouring in to the home he was most safe and happy in. Please keep the family and friends in mind as we fight this treacherous battle for JUSTICE.
The police are waiting for the DNA test. Which takes one or two months. I'm sorry for your loss. I've lost precious things before, both living and nonliving. I have found that we shouldn't Judge the people responsible, (but they still need to receive punishment) It's not what they would have wanted. It's best to remember our loved ones lived instead of remembering they died The rest is in God's hands.
Julie Appleby.... We appreciate your desire for wanting to help raise funds for Sean overseas. In an effort to keep the funds all together, we ask that anyone who wants to donate outside of the Phenix City area, to please donate here. This is the best way to know that ALL money meant for Sean is going DIRECTLY to Sean's parents to cover his medical expenses. If you would like to help, you can print the flyers from here and distribute them at your place of work. (Please get confirmation from your boss before distributing them at work) And as always, prayers, well wishes, and good vibes are always welcomed! :)
