On Saturday January 20th, the day Sean and Jen closed on their new house, Sean called out in the middle of the night. He had collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital, after having a massive brain stem stroke from a blood clot. They immediately did surgery, but damage already done has left Sean paralyzed, only able to move his eyes one direction. He cannot speak, and he cannot breathe on his own.

Sean makes his living as a radio DJ and radio program director, both requiring his voice. Though his mind is clear and functioning, he has to go through potentially months or years of treatments in hopes of regaining the ability to live a normal life and work again.

Sean has lost all of his income. His wife Jennifer who is an artist, has not had an income since their recent move to Portland and is going to be required 24-7 for his care.

They have massive medical bills to pay and they need your help immediately. The last thing they need is to have their home foreclosed while they are going through this tragedy.

Imagine if you or your spouse/partner was hit with a stroke, trapped inside a non-working body, and the income for your family was instantly lost, while you're facing the most difficult time of your life.

These people need some of their financial stress removed so they can focus on medical care. They need help paying massive medical bills, and enough money to survive.

Your compassion is needed. We all know that this could hit any of us at anytime. Please help us give this loving couple a lifeline. If you can give big, please do, but even a tiny donation will help.

Thank you.,
Eric and Laurie Rhoads, friends of Sean and Jen

PS: I misspelled Demery, but because the link contains the misspelled name, I can’t change it at this point. Sorry everyone. - Eric

Update: It has been six months. Sean has not improved and is still trapped in his body but totally aware of what’s going on around him. Medical bills are mounting, insurance is trying to get out of paying, the family has no income and have been almost wiped out financially. They need help.

Here is a letter from Sean’s widow Jennifer, to everyone who helped:

Dear Amazing family and friends,

This thank you is long overdue, but not a day has gone by without my prayers of gratitude to all of you.
This note is my attempt to put into words how much you all have meant to us, to Sean, to me.

It's been 14 months since Sean’s stroke, 6 months since he died peacefully surrounded by family.
I admit I have been overwhelmed, depressed and in chaos. I have moved twice, had Sean in 3 hospitals, including a medical flight to Utah, I’ve made it through the holidays and the many milestones of the year. I’ve battled my own illnesses and the crazy world of medical bills, insurance, and the business of death.

I could not have done any of this without all of you. Simple but true.
Your love, gifts, support, messages, visits across country have kept me going, kept Sean going through the worst of his struggles.
He was alert and aware until the very end, I read him your messages, and kept him up to date on your gifts. He was so surprised, humbled and so very grateful.
As the primary provider, he was very worried about finances and your gifts kept us going, paid for his medical expenses, kept me housed and fed and took the daily financial struggle off my mind.
It was because of you that I was able to focus on Sean and his care, to be his advocate, to be by his side.
Your gifts gave me the ability to be where I was most needed.

I am in awe and deeply grateful, humbled beyond words at your generosity, at your willingness to help.
I am amazed at how quickly you all rallied, how far this community extended and how you continued to give and to send love and messages though out this long ordeal.
I hope one day to be able to give support and encouragement to the next person who is in need.

My deepest gratitude for the many many years of friendship with Eric and Laurie Rhoads. Without them this community would not have started.
Without Eric so many of Sean’s adventures in radio would not have happened, (which means my adventures would not have happened either).

As Spring approaches I am able to find some moments of peace, the tears have slowed down (except for writing this). I have been able find joy in my many memories (35 years worth!).
I am healing and recovering, today I believe that I will be ok, one day I will be ok.

Sending you all love and blessings for this new life we are creating together every day. May the Universe, God, Spirit, lift you all up as you have lifted me up.

in gratitude and awe,
Jenn Prochazka
