Hector is my little brother. He was diagnosed with Diabetes at age 12. Recently, he has had complications due to his Diabetes. In 2011, he was hopitalized due to some issues with his feet. They were eventually able to get all the infection, after weeks of out-patient therapy. Things have just gotten worse since then.
Last year, he was hospitalized again. Unfortunately, he lost a toe that time. Things have been pretty rocky since then. He has been on and off of work due to issues with his feet.
In December of last year, he started having complications with his eyes. We got him in to see the Ophthamologist in January. He was diagnosed with Diabetic Retinopathy. It's caused by damage to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (retina). He immediately started a treatment plan involving shots and laser treatment. This seems to be helping a little bit. However, he may have already lost most of his eyesight in the right eye.
In March, he was hospitalized again, due to issues with both feet. He was in the hospital for 6 days. He was finally sent home, but has to go in to the hospital every day for IV Infusion. He is on triple antibiotics, in hopes that the infection will clear up.
Hector was layed off from work at the end of February, due to his ability to work. Since December he has only worked a week or two. That also meant that he lost his insurance. He is unable to collect unemployment because he is not physically able to work. It's not likely that he will be able to return to work anytime soon, if at all. We are in the process of applying for Disability, but that will take a while. He was able to pay for 2 months of Cobra Insurance, but that will end as of the end of April. Not sure what will happen after that.
His friends are having a benefit concert on May 16th to help. If anyone is not able to make it to the benefit, or would just like to donate, it would be greatly appreciated.
