O meu nome é Rita, sou natural de Viana do Castelo e recentemente fui premiada com duas bolsas de estudo.
A minha faculdade de eleição, o College of Motion Pictures Arts na Florida State University foi descrita pelo Fiske Guide como “uma das melhores escolas de cinema da nação”, pelo The Hollywood Reporter como uma “das melhores do mundo” e já lhe valeu uma distinção do Directors Guild of America.
Entre as muitas razões que me levaram a escolher esta escola, algumas das principais passam pelo facto de ter um rácio de 5 alunos para um professor, ser a única escola dos EUA a financiar os filmes dos alunos e ter um programa extremamente prático e focado em storytelling durante seis semestres consecutivos.

Há cerca de duas semanas, recebi a feliz notícia de que a escola me ofereceria uma assistantship no valor de 30,000$ no primeiro ano, sendo renovável para o segundo. Em contrapartida, deveria mudar-me durante o mês de Junho para frequentar um curso extra de Verão a começar dia 17 e com um custo de 2,400$.

Assim sendo, os custos exorbitantes originais de cerca de 135,000$ reduziram 12,500$ no primeiro ano e 30,000$ no segundo. Apesar da redução, os custos estão ainda muito fora do meu alcance e uma vez que sou estudante internacional, não sou elegível para a ajuda financeira ou um empréstimo nos EUA.

Caso existam entidades interessadas em apoiar esta causa, poderei retribuir através da realização de produtos audiovisuais.

Licenciei-me em Ciências da Comunicação na Universidade Nova de Lisboa e fiz ERASMUS na Universidade de Bolonha. No terceiro e último ano de estudos, estagiei no FabLab Lisboa e, antes de me licenciar, recebi uma bolsa da Portuguese American Postgraduate Society. Graças a esta, no verão de 2015 mudei-me para Nova Iorque, onde estagiei no consulado português.
Assim que regressei a Portugal, trabalhei no Lisbon and Sintra Film Festival durante três anos, onde fui responsável pelo coordenação de convidados e, mais tarde, secretária da direção. Fui assistente de produção de duas longas metragens, Le Divan de Staline produzido pela Leopardo Filmes e 9 Doigts produzido pela O Som e a Fúria e fui ainda membro da direção da AoNorte, durante dois anos.
Em 2018 realizei a minha primeira curta metragem documental ‘Os Estrangeiros’ que seguiu caminho em quatro festivais de cinema entre Portugal e Suécia, tendo ganho o 1º Prémio no concurso “Alto Minho Storytelling” no mês passado.

As dificuldades de trabalhar em cinema em Portugal, o desejo de ser financeiramente independente e o facto de ter tido todo o meu equipamento de filmagem roubado, empurraram-me para Londres em 2018.
Em terras inglesas, trabalhei arduamente em restaurantes para que pudesse voltar a comprar todo o meu equipamento. Fui selecionada para o Head Start Programme - the young faces of the Creative Industries, estagiei numa grande produtora internacional - Pathé Uk, tive um dos meus filmes curados pela plataforma NOWNESS e ganhei ainda um prémio durante um festival do British Film Institute.

A minha vontade de fazer cinema supera todas as outras e empurrou-me nesta cruzada de me tornar realizadora.
Contar historias será sempre a minha maior motivação e desejo mas, neste momento, preciso de alguém que as ouça.

English description


My name is Rita, I’m from Portugal and I was recently awarded two scholarships.
After applying to a film master's degree at the College of Motion Picture Arts of the Florida State University, I was offered an amazing assistantship worth of 30,000$ during each year. Other than being one of the best Film Schools in the world, its hands-on curriculum, the five-to-one student to faculty ratio, the state-of-the-art facilities, equipment and software and the fact that is the only American institution to finance all the student productions were major reasons that led me to select this school.

These two awards allowed an enormous reduction from the total cost of the MFA.
From the initial 135,000$, I have now left to pay 12,500$ during the first year and 30,000$ during the second. However, this is still way out of my range.

Far from giving up, I am trying my best to reach anyone with the financial capacity of helping me.
I will be extremely grateful for any kind of contribution and will try to cover the missing money using personal savings, family help and by applying to different funds and scholarships.

If any company or person is interested in supporting significantly this cause, I am available to discuss my retribution in the form of audiovisual products.

I graduated from the Nova University of Lisbon in Communication Sciences and did ERASMUS in the Bologna University.
During the third and last year of study, I interned at the FabLab Lisboa and was awarded a scholarship from the Portuguese American Postgraduate Society. Thanks to this, in the summer of 2015 I moved to New York and interned at the Portuguese Consulate.
After coming back to Portugal, I worked at the Lisbon and Sintra Film Festival for three years where I was the guests' coordinator and later the director’s secretary. I was production assistant of two french features, Le Divan de Staline produced by Leopardo Filmes and 9 Doigts produced by O Som e a Fúria and board member of AoNorte, for two years.
In 2018 I directed my first documentary short film that has been screened in 4 film festivals in Portugal and Sweden. It was recently the winner of the “Alto Minho Storytelling” competition.

The difficulties of working in film, my desire for financial independence and the fact that I had all my film equipment stolen pushed me to move to London in 2018. In restaurants, I worked hard until I was able to buy everything back. I was selected for the Head Start Programme - the young faces of the Creative Industries, I interned at Pathé Uk, had one of my films curated by NOWNESS and won an award during a festival of the British Film Institute.

My desire to work in film surpasses all the others.
My biggest motivation is storytelling but, right now, I’m looking for someone who listens.
