58,000 children are placed at risk yearly in the U. S. when family court puts them in the custody or part time care of an abusive parent. To put this in perspective 58,000 is the same number of soldiers killed during the 20 year span of the Vietnam War. It’s a huge number that can’t be ignored.
This primarily results from a high conflict custody matter involving prior and current partner abuse, control, and intimidation.
Add to this that at least four reliable studies (including a study supported by the Federal Justice Department and the American Bar Association) on family court failure have proven that less than 2% of protective parents lie about this abuse. It’s staggering and every minute of every day family court and family court judges are failing to protect children at an alarming and epidemic rate.
The little girl we call “Grace” has fallen victim to this abuse and fruther abuse by a judge who sent her to live with her abuser while the judge figures it out. Those were his words.
This family has been fortunate that they found a child advocacy lawyer who specializes in these cases. But that comes at a high price and it puts this family into debt. And like most families, it's a huge burden. A large portion of that amount has been paid off, however they have a long ways to go and they are not out of the woods concerning Grace’s safety and there may be more expenses. This precious girl and her family has been victimized by the predator and family court (a therapist has confirmed the abuse) and now getting a double whammy with the cost.
This traumatic circumstance not only created advocates for their precious Grace, but also advocates for others. They are working with a national organization and a state representative to pass the "Safe Child Act" in Pennsylvania where there is a great need for family court reform. They are working through their own exhaustion to make things better for others.
