Saving Chip

Donation protected

Chip was found in a corn field with a fractured left front leg.  Animal Aid of Southwestern Michigan a 501 c3 in Berrien County Michigan that works with at-risk animals responded to the emergency call and took this friendly 1 1/2-year-old in for medical treatment.

I was the volunteer who responded to the call  to assessed Chip.  I found the  large but friendly boxer/lab/pit male behind the home that had contacted us with the food and blanket they had provided.   After some coaxing He let me pet him and examine the leg that he was not able to put his weight on.  I could not believe that Chip allowed me to lift him  into my Van with the dangling front leg.  I drove around with Chip for 2 hours before a vet that could see him was located.

Chip was quiet and well behaved for the ride.  He kept staring at me with those huge brown eyes while I was calling around trying to locate a vet. He had to be in pain. While driving around we shared a cheese panini and a bag of chips (hence the name). When we finally found a vet that could work us in he was given his initial shots so that he could be placed in boarding and his leg X-rayed.  The news was bad, the leg was fractured and he would have to see a specialist.  The specialist we referred to wanted $2'000 up front which the organization did not have.  Another local vet was persuaded to look at the leg and set it till we could attempt to locate the owner or raise money for his care.

No owner came forward to claim this beautiful boy.  At his next vet appointment, we were told that the leg had started to heal and he was a good candidate to have the leg set. In fact, it had healed so much that they would have to rebreak it to pin the leg.  So the decision was made to splint the leg and pray for the best,  The bad news was that Chip tested positive for heartworm and would need to start treatment.

The splint had to be all the way up his leg to his shoulder and he had to be kept very quiet so the decision was made to leave him at Mutterly Love Kennel with knowable staff and special kenneling facility. They were kind enough to give us a discounted rate.

Chip is now undergoing heartworm treatment, has been given all his shots, neutered, and his leg is well on it's way to being healed. He will be up for adoption soon.

BUT he has run up quite a bill even though we did our best to keep the costs down. It is heartbreaking for us to have to turn down other animals in need of rescue and medical care because Chip is draining our emergency fund. His bill to date with Heartworm treatment is just over $3'000.

He is a great dog, loves everyone, just wants to be out of the cast and to play, run, jump and find his forever home. We do not regret rescuing him for a minute but we could really use some help with funds for his care. We would like to replenish our emergency fund so that we can help more animals in need.

Animal Aid is a 501c3 serving lower Southwestern Michigan.

We are all volunteer.

No one profits in any way except the animals we rescue.   We try very hard to make  all donations go to the animals.

Can you Chip in a little for Chip? (I know corny line but ...) Please help us!
