The Central Walbran Valley Ancient Forest is located along the border of the Carmannah/Walbran Provincial Park, south Vancouver island, British Columbia, Canada, in traditional Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations territory,
is a rare, unprotected world-class remnant of some of the oldest and largest Western redcedar trees on earth, a living reservoir of coastal forest biodiversity and a remote temperate rainforest wilderness of outstanding ecological and recreational values.

The recent proposed logging plans for eight cutblocks by Surrey-based logging company Teal-Jones, in the endangered heart of the Walbran Valley Ancient Forest, has prompted Friends of Carmannah/Walbran  to cut witness trails into some of these wild places to provide public access to citizen's wishing to experience their natural beauty firsthand and take action for their protection. Visitors are encouraged to participate in the development and maintenance of a communal base camp which will support further trailbuilding, biological research and non-violent protest activities in the valley.

Friends of Carmanah/Walbran is a 100% volunteer-run collective of like-minded people unequivocally opposed to these logging plans on the grounds that they threaten: the ecological integrity of the surrounding forests and steep upper slopes of the Castle Grove, the delicate hydrology of the watershed, rare karst formations, critical and endangered wildlife habitat, the carbon-storing services of the ancient forest and irreplaceable splendour of this popular south island wilderness recreation destination, which de facto serves as perhaps the most popular entrance point into Carmannah/Walbran Provincial Park.

It seems that one of the biggest obstacles for people getting into experience the natural splendour of the remnant ancient temperate rainforests of the Walbran valley/Kax:iks, is lack of transportation.

Most people don't have access to the kind of vehicles required to travel down rough logging roads into the remote heart of this popular and still threatened portion of the traditional Pacheedaht and Qwa-ba-diwa territory.

To overcome that barrier, the Friends of Carmanah/Walbran are opening a fund to subsidize the cost of transportation to this threatened ecological paradise, 3 1/2 hours from Victoria.

This fund will help cover the cost of rental vehicles and vehicle maintenance on those who make their vehicles available, while we raise the capital to purchase our own ten passenger van, which we can hopefully run on veggie oil and reduce the carbon footprint getting to the river.

Please indicate in the comments that you would like your donation to go towards the Transportation Fund.
