Save The Depot

We are the Martinsville Arts Council/Merry MAC Players. Our home is the Depot Theatre--a repurposed train station in downtown Martinsville. We recently discovered that the roof is in urgent need of repairs which have been estimated at $43,000. Less expensive solutions are not an option because the 100-year-old building is on the National Register of Historic Places, which requires us to preserve the clay tile roof. The Depot is an architectural jewel--a reminder of an important period of our city’s history.

While it is true that money given to this project would be going to a physical structure, it is important to understand the building’s human impact. Each year, some 2000 patrons attend our theatrical productions, concerts, movies, magic shows and stand-up comedy. Without the Depot, we could lose the only community theatre organization in a 45-mile radius. To see a play, lovers of the arts would have to go to neighboring towns--where ticket prices are almost always considerably higher.

Audiences are not the only beneficiaries of the Depot’s activities. Over the years, countless people of all ages have challenged themselves, realized hidden dreams, learned to work with others, developed leadership skills, made lasting friendships, and had a lot of fun. Participating in productions has been an important (sometimes even defining) part of many lives. Our reach extends well beyond Morgan County. There is no other place locally which offers such opportunities to young children, adults, and home-schooled families.

Although the Depot is our home base, the Arts Council can be seen all around town. We work with the library, the Art Sanctuary, the school system, the Fall Foliage Festival, the Chamber of Commerce and Jimmy Nash Park. Throughout the year, our efforts touch many people without their even knowing it.

The cost and urgency of the Depot roof repair are overwhelming, but for many reasons, the cost of not making those repairs would be even greater. We have already received two grant commitments, but we are in immediate need of more funds. After withdrawing $10,000 from our own modest savings, we will still be $17,000 short of being able to make the necessary repairs before winter.

Thank you for considering to help us with this project which will enable us to continue our impact on the quality of life in Morgan County.
