We have helped thousands of women and families and now we need your help!
The Australian Doula College (ADC) and Doula Care is a semi not for profit family owned business providing education, support and continuity of care for women and their partners during pregnancy, childbirth and beyond. We train doulas and childbirth educators and are the only doula organisation in the world with a government accredited training, however we do not get any government assistance.
We operate a charity arm along side the ADC - Doula Heart Network, where by all of our services are free of charge to women and families in need. We have been operating like this since 2005 and have lovingly supported thousands of new families.
In Sept 2013 we expanded and excitedly took a large retail property in which to operate from and after a short nine months, after an expensive fit out, we were wrongfully and in an extremely nasty fashion evicted from that property. The expenses to get in and out of that property and to urgently relocate us into a temporary space, cost approx $53000.00. The business is currently being run from home.
Since the eviction a year ago we have been defending ourselves against those landlords who took us to the local court. Last Tuesday the Magistrate ruled in our favour, which means we do not have to pay the landlords anything, however we will only receive $2900.00 being the remaining portion of our bond back. We were not granted any costs and with our legal fees hovering around $40k we have found ourselves in a position where we are painfully considering having to shut our doors.
The past twelve months has taken its toll emotionally, physically and financially on our director and founder Renee Adair (who has been supporting and educating women, their partners and families for 20yrs). It has also deeply affected our small and dedicated team.
Also in the last twelve months we lost the support of our RTO, who, without warning or discussion, abruptly dropped our agreement back in March.
This has all ultimately impacted on our ability to continue this vital work and has effected how many women we have been able to continue to train and support, particularly the women and families we support and educate free of charge, through the Doula Heart Network.
We are now turning to you, the families we have supported and the doulas we have trained over the years. To our families and friends and others in our industry and beyond. Our situation is not uncommon.......Women in business not taken seriously, our work devalued in the patriarchal business world. Bullied into a corner and forced to defend ourselves. A harsh and unfair judicial system.
We need your help to keep doing the awesome, much needed heartfelt work that we provide and love so very much.
