Data on medical student and physician wellbeing are disconcerting, not only for the medical providers but for patients as well. Patient care quality unsurprisingly depends heavily on high-functioning physicians. However, studies demonstrate that medical trainee and physician burnout rates are at an all time high, and continue to increase. Multiple institutions have acknowledged this issue and pursued curricular change; however, these efforts are not enough.
An estimated 300-400 physicians commit suicide every year. The suicide rate among male physicians is 1.41 times higher than the general male population, and female physicians have a suicide rate 2.27 times higher than the general female population. In one study, 23 percent of interns had suicidal thoughts. Twenty eight percent of resident physicians experience a major depressive episode during training versus 7-8 percent of similarly aged individuals in the U.S. general population.
Medical student and physician suicide is happening in our programs and institutions, all across the United States. The culture of medical training enforces silence. The medical education system is broken and requires change. It's time to speak out. Let's start a dialogue. Let your voice be heard.

This grant was created to serve two purposes:
1) Spark a national dialogue on how to improve medical student and resident physician wellbeing and reduce medical trainee burnout and suicide.
2) Support proposals and initiatives to improve medical student and resident physician wellbeing.
We need your help in raising funds for this cause. 100% of the funds received will go straight to awarding students and helping them implement their proposals to address medical student and resident burnout, depression, and suicide.
