We've Met Our Goal!!! Thank You

FANTASTIC NEWS!

Our friend started this GoFundMe website for us, and as a result, we have raised money to help our child, Jackson, who is severely autistic and engages in extreme self-injurious behavior, aggression and property destruction on an hourly basis. We have been trying to get insurance to approve and cover his admission to the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Maryland, one of the few facilities where he can obtain the treatment he needs to address these behaviors so he and our family can start to live a happy and productive life.

Our insurer was refusing to cover KKI’s therapy, which will cost at least $460,000. Without insurance funding, KKI would not admit our child for the treatment he so desperately needs.

I searched for a lawyer with experience who specializes and could help us with our insurance company. I found that lawyer, Jodi Bouer, in my own backyard, Princeton! We first spoke to Jodi on Monday morning and she dropped everything to help us. For the last 4 days she been working nonstop with us to convince our insurer to honor its coverage obligation and get Jackson admitted to KKI. She marshalled our legal arguments and medical opinions, and enlisted legislators and the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance (DOBI) to compel insurer to cover Jackson’s treatment at KKI. Because of Jodi’s hard work and network of relationships, she secured the support of State Senator Joe Vitale, chairman of the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee, and DOBI. Yesterday we got the news: our insurer is agreeing to cover KKI.

As a result, Jackson is being admitted to KKI today!!

We cannot thank Senator Vitale’s office, and DOBI Commissioner Richard Badolato and his team at DOBI enough for taking on Jackson’s cause, lending their critical support, and proving that people are more important than politics. Please drop them an email to thank them for helping Jackson at [email redacted] and [email redacted].gov.

OUR FIGHT IS NOT OVER!

According to Jodi, we have a long road ahead of us. Based on her extensive experience in representing families in these types of cases, we can expect that our insurer will deny coverage for continuing services within the next few months or even weeks, hit us with uncovered and out of network medical expenses requiring another legal battle and potentially leaving us with a bill of a hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical expenses. We also still have to pay our deductibles and coinsurance, as well as pay unreimbursed medical expenses. To get my child admitted to KKI today, I signed an agreement with KKI where I agreed to pay any uncovered expenses.

OUR PLAN

We are thrilled and humbled by the fact that so many people have donated to Jackson’s GoFundMe page. Jackson’s cause has highlighted the shortage of facilities with neurobehavioral units like KKI, which are only a handful of facilities in the country that can provide effective treatment for severely autistic children like Jackson, as well as the difficulty families have in getting insurers to agree to cover the only treatment that can address the profound needs of children like Jackson. Should any money be left over from this page, we plan on donating it to an autism-related charity to help other kids like Jackson get the help they need.

Jackson’s future is already looking a lot brighter because of your help. It is rare that the simple act of a donation leads to such immediate improvement, but the fact of the matter is your donation and Jodi’s advocacy have already made a huge difference. Our family cannot thank you enough for sustaining our hope and spirits through Jackson’s long battle.

We thank you from the bottom of our heart for all that you have done for our family! And again, thanks to your support, we have accomplished our goal and are closing our campaign. We will continue our journey with Jack now the he has the help he so desperately needed. We will keep you posted as we continue to fight to give Jackson a happy and productive life!! I will be posting Jack’s progress at KKI on my facebook page.
