On January 9, 2018, our part of the world changed. After the Thomas Fire, now the largest fire in California history, our town got hit with a momentary downpour. It rained so much, so fast, that our oily, barren hills above turned to mud and began to rush towards the village below. Huge boulders flowed on top like ping pong balls. People were asleep as the 6 foot high river of mud and debris flowed through their homes, ripping them out of their beds or tearing their entire homes off the foundations. It happened in an instant and hundreds of homes and 23 lives were lost.

Our community came together and "mud angels " rose from the mud and did (and are still doing) so much good. They gave their time, money and muscle. Thousands helped by digging the mud out of homes. They helped hunt for belongings. They shared their homes, vehicles, and anything else they could offer. It was and continues to be one of the most awful disasters, and yet, it is also one of the purest and kindest times many of us have ever experienced.

Our community has been struggling to heal. Businesses have reopened, funerals have happened, and for some, lives are returning to a new type of normal. It has started to feel a little better. But, it didn't last long. Yesterday, we got an email from our superintendent that our school budget is being slashed by 10% ($485,000) and we have to figure out a way to fix it fast.

"After the trauma of seeing their community ravaged by floodwater, their friends and classmates lost forever, we simply cannot bear the thought of forcing our children to lose their favorite teachers, and treasured programs. As parents, teachers, and community members, we are committed to raising 100% of the lost revenue - $485,000 - by May 1st to ensure that this does not happen. We hope you will help us reach our goal." ~ Amy Alzina, Cold Spring School Principal/Superintendent

This means we will have to cut staff. We only have 9 teachers now! This could also lead to the depletion of our necessary reserves, which we must maintain in order to remain in operation. Our school could be closed.

WE CANNOT LET THIS HAPPEN. WE WILL NOT LET THIS HAPPEN. THESE KIDS AND THEIR PARENTS HAVE BEEN THROUGH ENOUGH.
