Save the Technicolor Tree Tribe

My name is Ray Carroll, and I live in what I truly believe to be the greatest home on Earth: the Technicolor Tree Tribe. We are an intentional community housing primarily USC students in Los Angeles, and we strive to be a non-hierarcical, anti-racist, anti-classist, feminist, queer, consensual, and environmentally conscious space. This is a home where we cook, clean, and care for each other, and where love is our first language. This house saved my life, and it has been a place of refuge, sanctuary, growth, and discovery for me, my housemates, and the many of dreamers who have roosted here in the decade before us that this commune has been flourishing.

For years now, we have been dealing with increasingly frequent harrassmant from our landlord. He is in an ownership dispute of this home with another person, and we have gotten caught in the middle as mere tenants who continue to pay their rent and haven't done anything wrong. However, our landlord, who has repeatedly lied to us, manipulated us, and attempted to intimidate us, simply wants to end the whole thing by selling the house. And to do that, he needs to evict us. Which he is trying to do.

A court case has been filed against the individual tenants of this house. Our landlord is trying to evict us and get us to pay rent that he claims we haven't paid (even though we have).  We are being sued, and we're in over our heads. Most of us are students just trying to focus on our studies (and in my case, trying to graduate in the spring.)

We have found relatively inexpensive legal aid, but there are still several fees we need to pay. Here's a break down of what we're asking for.

$600 THIS ONE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT: WE NEED IT BY TUESDAY. We had to file "answers" to the summons we were served when we were sued, but the information we provided wasn't an adequate defense, so we have to ammend them. TUESDAY IS OUR LAST CHANCE TO DO SO! This money is our only shot at not losing this court case by default.

$2500 - This is what we need for legal representation. It's pricy, but considering most lawyers can cost tens and tens of thousands of dollars, it's a good investment.

$1605 - This will pay some back rent we owe. It is not imperative that we have this to pay legal fees, but it will make us look better if our rent is caught up.

The remaining $295 will help us pay back some money to the man who runs our property managment company. Again, it is not necessary, but it will make our case better when if this case goes to court.

Again, the Technicolor Tree Tribe is one of the most beautiful spaces I have ever known. If you've ever attended one of our vegan potlucks, if you have ever laid your head to rest as a tenant of this home or as one of our many vagabond couchsurfers, if you have danced to live music at any of our parties, if you have found yourself in the presence of friends and revolutionaries on our front porch late at night, if this house has ever meant anything to you or someone you love - please help us protect our home. Please consider donating or sharing this link. And in the meantime, from the bottom of all of our hearts: thank you.
