Save the Battle of Selma

Tax deductible

An end of era could begin today, as one of the Queen City’s premier attractions, the Battle of Selma Re-enactment and the dozen events encompassing the weekend was cancelled due to new city fees. The organizers felt increasing the event budget by 76% could not be justified with only 3 months’ notice. We hope to have the 31 year event return April 26-29, 2018 with support from the community and those around the country who are vested in this effort. There have been many people asking how they can help, where they can donate, and want to serve. We are working to find solutions with our town and look forward to sharing information with you as we learn more. After sharing our story, many suggested gofundme, so here we are! For now, the way you can show your support is to donate here at gofundme, and /or by becoming a member of the April 1865 Society, Inc. by the link on our website. www.battleofselma.com
The Battle of Selma was scheduled to be held in April 2017, with two days of school tours and stations and two days of events ranging from drills, tacticals, battles, a ball and a memorial service. A major offering of this annual event is the School Days at the Battle of Selma, an organized agenda of living history lectures in addition to tours of the Civil War campsites and period Sutlers. Students get to see firsthand how soldiers fought, dressed, and lived during the Civil War. We also provide Civil War lesson plans on our website, www.battleofselma.com, for the benefit of in classroom learning. We feel that our school days make an exciting and enjoyable field trip for students of all ages. Partners of the event usually have other events that coincide with the weekend and the organizers are thankful for the continued support over the years.

James Hammonds, who has been with the Battle of Selma since it began in 1987 is the current President of the April 1865 Society, Inc. the event sponsor. "The Society is a 501 (c) 3 charitable education non-profit, and our 300 members will continue our mission to inform the public about this era of our country’s history through events and the historic programs. Hopefully, support of the event is strong enough to make a 2018 Battle of Selma possible.” We work to insure its mission of providing the infrastructure, logistics, and policy needed to produce an annual historical tourism event, as well as works closely with Re-enactment Units to ensure the best historical accuracy and amenities. We remain optimistic about 2018, and continue to value your support over the years. Thank you for continuing to support this event. Please check our website and Facebook page for updates as they become available.
