Save SNAP at Farmers Markets

Tax deductible

The impending shutdown of Novo Dia, the country's largest processor of SNAP-EBT at farmers markets, has sent shock-waves through the industry and resulted in dozens of articles in the press. Unless an 11th hour solution is found, on August 1st, 1,700 markets will lose the ability to process SNAP-EBT. (Update: funding has come through to keep Novo Dia in business through the end of August. This gives markets breathing room in terms of finding solutions and getting back up equipment. Read more here .)

This news could not have come at a worse time. A disruption to SNAP payment processing services (during the busiest time of year for many markets) would hit markets hard, threaten the prosperity of small farmers, and impact the ability for hungry families to access fresh, affordable food.

Farmers Market Coalition is accepting donations to purchase equipment for markets and farmers who will lose service because of the shutdown.  Replacement equipment typically runs between $600 and $900 per market. If you would like to make sure that your donation supports equipment for your local market, please indicate with your donation (should that market already have replacement equipment we will find another market in need).

For the latest information on the situation, you can visit our page at: https://farmersmarketcoalition.org/novo-dia-group-shutdown-information/

Other than a small percentage (5-10%) to cover staff costs to support this effort, all funds raised will go to cover equipment costs. Should a solution be found to the Novo Dia shutdown, or funding surpass the need, funds will be used to support ongoing efforts to improve SNAP EBT access at farmers markets. Applications will be accepted from markets that need replacement equipment on a first come first served basis with priority going to markets with the highest need.
