Save Mom's July

My mom is having a bad July: she's just recently out of a job (after having an unexpectedly troubling last week on the job with some bad stuff happening less than a mile away ) Right afterward, her AC gave out in her Baltimore rowhouse, and while investigating possible causes, discovered that her basement had flooded, ruining nearly everything down there.

She's already gotten her final paycheck for her job and had it evaporate dealing with complications from the basement flood, and doesn't have the money to get AC. She'll have some amount of unemployment while she continues her search for a new job, but that will only go so far.

I'm helping where I can - I just know it won't be enough. So I've come up with a few things that I can give away in the hopes of raising some cash for her to hopefully bridge the gap until she can find a new job, and turn this July into something better.

Here's what I'm offering (email me - dave at critical-hits.com after donating to tell me which one of these you want):

Donate $10 or more and I'll send you a print and play PDF of a game I'm working on - an 18 card Werewolf-style game that can be played anywhere and doesn't require a moderator, an app, or even a playing surface. (Unlimited)

Donate $25 or more if you want to get a Jack L. Chalker trading card from the Walter Day Science Fiction Historical Trading Card Series. (10 available) Donate $50 or more if you want to get a set of the Science Fiction Historical Trading Cards that we were given alongside the Chalker ones. (4 available.)

Donate $30 or more and I'll send you PDFs of the Hugo-nominated The Science-Fantasy Publishers: A Bibliographic History 1923-2004 AND all its supplements by Jack L. Chalker and Mark Owings. (Unlimited)

Donate $50 or more for consulting of your board/card game prototype. I'll read rules/cards/etc. for whatever you send me and give you my feedback. I can also playtest if you find me at a convention (Gen Con, Metatopia, Unpub, or PAX Unplugged) and we set up a time. (10 available)

Donate $100 or more and I'll ship you some leftover swag that I've received in my 13 years in running Critical Hits. There's games, t-shirts, CDs, NASA literature, and more. (5 available)

Thanks for reading, and I hope you'll consider donating and/or sharing to get my mom's summer back on track.

Just a quick update for some good news - Eva got a job! It starts as a 3 month contract but hopefully will turn into something longer, and even during that time, it'll make fixing the current issues a lot easier.

She is in San Jose for WorldCon this week (some of the travel was purchased long before this happened, and other parts were generously donated by others specifically for this) so hopefully she'll see some of you there.

Thanks once again for all of your support!

I was hoping I could come back to this page and tell you all that things were taking a turn for the better, but sadly, that is not the case.

Last night, someone broke into my mother's home while she was there. Without getting too much into detail, she's OK physically, but the robber did take money, her phone, and more. She's understandably pretty shaken up, and the police don't seem interested in helping.

Everyone's already been so generous and it was a huge help in getting her basement flood and AC situations fixed. Now, however, we may just have to get her moved elsewhere or come up with other options. Please keep her in your thoughts while we figure out next steps.

Hi folks, just wanted to post an update now that we've hit the goal. (I promise I won't bombard your email with these - I hate that too.)

I just got off the phone with my mom and we're both overjoyed that we've hit the goal so quickly. I'm going to try and get some of the money over to her ASAP, since she lined up someone to take a look at the AC. (Also apparently her water heater gave up around the same time, so she has neither hot nor cold in her house.) Also substantial progress was made in removing water damaged items from the basement and convincing Baltimore City municipal workers to take it away. It did mean throwing away a bunch of books, which in my family, is a serious matter.

Mom has had a few phone screenings for jobs this week, all of which have said they need someone to start quickly. Since we don't know how long it will take for any of these to pan out, I'm going to keep this going to help cover the gap.

Once again, thank you all so much for your contributions, shares, and support. Here's a completely accurate photo of my parents.
