Help us Save Lewes Schools
We love our unique, individual, characterful community schools in Lewes, and we want them to continue to enrich the lives of children for many generations to come.
We want a say in whether our six local schools are converted into academies and grouped into a Multi Academy Trust (MAT). Plans are already underway to pursue the creation of this MAT, which we believe will have a negative impact on our schools and our children. Many parents, teachers, support staff and the NEU are opposed to the forming of this MAT.
There is still time to save our schools, but we must act quickly to raise awareness and engagement. The governors of the primary schools have not yet agreed to initiate the formal process of MAT creation, and we need to get the message out there to parents and the wider community before it's too late.
Our concerns, in a nutshell:
• MATs are not even required to employ qualified teachers;
• MATs are free to sell off their assets, including land;
• There is no extra money allocated to MATs; they remain vulnerable to cuts;
• MATs can choose to exclude children with special needs;
• Once formed, MATs cannot revert to local authority control. They can, however, be taken over by other Academy chains at any point. Turning our schools into academies would be an irreversible step.
