Saved Etta's Life

Donation protected
My sweet friend Etta (GSP mix breed) was attacked by a pack of Javelinas three doors down from our house while walking home with me from a friend's house.  She only weighs 40lbs and was pummeled and gored by these wild, roaming animals that were feeding on Halloween pumpkins. We turned a corner, nearly home and startled them, about 8 of them. Several adults and a few babies.

I heard a ghostly howl/yelp but could not find Etta.  I saw the pack run off, but I could not see Etta.  Then I heard pounding on my front gate, I looked and Etta was at home, begging to get into our yard.  I ran to her, she was standing at the gate, under the lights, whimpering and shaking and her intestines were hanging our of her belly.

Etta suffered 4 serious puncture wounds from the goring. One wound to the abdomen was so deep that nearly 3/4 of her intestines distended through the opening, and they were outside of her body for nearly 4 hours before I could get her to the hospital (1.5hrs away) and before the Dr. could stabilize her for surgery.  She was deep in shock when we arrived at the Hospital, lost a great deal of blood and her intestines were being tightly constricted by the narrow opening.  Fortunately, they were not necrotic but they were not functioning when she was cleaned and surgically reassembled. Too long of a portion was impacted to surgically remove, we had to gamble and hope and pray for her to beat the odds.

Her odds of survival were less than 20% even once she was stable enough for surgery.  At three points during the 5 hr surgery the Dr. conferred with me about risks and concerns. 3 times I chose to fight for Etta's life.  It was not the night for my best friend to die!

Etta is my best friend, companion and like a child to me. She is my dog's puppy, and I was there the minute she was born. Nearly an hour after the 5th of 6 that arrived every 15mins, Etta was the last to make her way into this world. She came into it, A FIGHTER and she is fighting to overcome this attack.

Etta lived her first few years with a friend that adopted her as a puppy and then the family fell on difficult health. To help my friends and Etta, I adopted Etta back into my life 4.5 years ago and, since then, she has been my faithful companion, protector, my sweet puppy love and best friend.

When I adopted her back into my life, I thought I was rescuing her and helping my friend.  As it turns out, Etta returned to me at a time in my life when I most needed her special kind of love, devotion and friendship; I was on the tail end of a heartbreaking divorce.

Over the past week, my focus has been to keep her alive and by my side!  It has been touch and GO with Etta "leaping" over several hurdles along the way and defying odds at every turn.  Caring for her this past week reminds me of caring for my Grandmother following her stroke a few years ago.  It is HARD work and the most worthwhile a person can do, lending a hand to help a friend or family member overcome a crisis!

Etta helped me with my recovery, and my grandmother with hers, and is a HUGE part of our family.

When it came time to make a decision, whether to help Etta fight for her life, there was no decision to make.  Etta's life is worth fighting for and I am SOOO thankful that Etta is surviving this trauma!

I am asking for help in covering Etta's vet expenses for the night of her attack and emergency surgery and the five days she spent at the hospital in the ICU.  She could not have received better care and it is apparent in the fact that she beat the odds at several turns along the way.

Please consider donating whatever amount is possible, and/or help us out by spreading the word!

For every $50 you donate, I will give you an Etta's World Calendar OR a mug with a pic of your choice of 3.

This is what communities are for, to help one another out in times of need. I will be eternally grateful to all that contribute to the healthy recovery and next half of Etta's vibrant life!!
