EAT-RITE OR DON'T EAT AT ALL!

On October 24th 2017, The St. Louis Post Dispatch reported horific news -- STL's favorite greasy spoon, Eat-Rite Diner, may be closing for good, due to a broken exhaust fan.

A broken exhaust fan!?  This beloved hole-in-the-wall has withstood more than half a century of attempted robberies, cars plowing through the walls, and belligerent Cubs fans.  A broken exhaust fan isn't going to stop this Grade A establishment from serving up slingers, not on our watch!

Help save a St. Louis institution, help 80 year old owner L.B. Powers install a new exhaust fan.

(All funds raised will be delivered in good faith to Eat-Rite ownership for facilities improvements and as a show of STL community support.  Worst case scenario this goes to their retirement fund, but let's not let that happen!)

EAT RITE WILL RE-OPEN AT 6AM TOMORROW MORNING!!! Joel & Shawna Holtman have been hard at work getting Eat Rite ready to be up and running by Cardinals' home opener, and it's finally happening.

Some history since I last updated donors here - Joel & Shawna contacted the Powers Family independently and worked out a deal to continue the Eat Rite legacy. LB & Dorcas Powers had the funds raised here directed to Joel & Shawna's efforts (though they've put WAY more into the 100% legit overhaul -- check out the HAND LETTERED menu updates & window signage!) The two were gracious enough to invite me in during the construction process, but I can't wait to see you all there at 6am tomorrow for coffee & a slinger! YOU DID IT! YOU SAVED EAT-RITE!

Today I delivered the funds raised to LB Powers, owner of Eat-Rite Diner. He's understandably tired of interviews & cameras, so we met just the two of us. The out-pour of support & love of his restaurant has humbled him. He is in his 80s, and unfortunately no longer has the energy needed to keep this running under his ownership.

The good news is he's definitely willing to let the right person take over where he leaves off. He would sell the business outright (he has the Eat-Rite brand registered), or allow someone to buy in or manage a minor share. His biggest concern seemed to be he wants someone with EXPERIENCE handling crowd & staff for a late night diner.

And you better believe I'm willing to facilitate a search for the right suitor to carry the Eat-Rite legacy further! Message me (or send VHS style speed dating tapes) with legitimate interest & I'll forward them on to the Powers family.

Special thanks to Lauren Pozen of KMOV for helping get the two of us together, and to Marty Murray, 7th Ward Committeeman, who is looking into legal concerns with an owner transfer.

Long live Eat-Rite! We're invested, and we're going to do all we can to keep this landmark slingin' slingers!

Thank you everybody for your overwhelming show of support! In just a couple days, we raised more than $1500, awesome job!

Obviously the longevity of Eat-Rite goes deeper than an exhaust fan replacement, but this fundraising effort will help to keep the griddle top burning a little longer while Eat-Rite ownership finds the right person/people to carry their legacy further.

While I was just a fan myself & did not know the Powers family personally, I have been in communication with multiple media outlets to make sure the funds raised by all of us find their rightful beneficiary. The funds are currently on hold by GoFundMe, and I'll post another update once I am able to withdraw & deliver them by hand to Eat-Rite ownership.

Hopefully we'll all be sitting at the counter again soon!
